"Take out" catering -- gratuity?

Chris, on April 17, 2014 at 8:56 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

Hey guys, for my wedding next weekend (April 27) we are using Carrabbas catering but we are picking the food up and hiring our own waiters/servers to work the wedding. Do we tip on the food from Carrabbas even though they arent doing anything aside from providing the food?

As someone who has worked food service, I don't think it's really necessary. It's a very nice gesture, and I'm sure that they would appreciate it if you did tip them, but it's not required.

If they are not setting anything up and just dropping the food they may already have charged you a delivery fee? I do not think it is necessary either but, then again do you tip your pizza delivery driver? So I would say maybe a $20 to the driver but not a percent on the total cost.

As somone who worked out Outback in takeout. Yes. It takes time to gather all the food and box it up. White takeout usually is paid a little more than servers tips are definately appreciated. I would think 10% would cover it well. Just like a server you want this person to provide your food correctly and ONTIME.

BTW forgot to add I LOVE CARRABBAS!!

Yum, we did Ruby Tuesdays drop off buffet. They charged a $75 delivery fee but I still was going to leave the driver a $20. Then I forgot with all the rush of the day and I don't think he got a tip. I still feel ashamed to this day!

Not necessary, but I feel it's the same with any delivery service. I always tip when something is delivered.

They arent delivering. I'll probably through the some cash, but I dont think I'm giving them 10%. I'm paying our head server to go up and pick it up with a van I'm renting to get all the decorations, etc to the wedding venue. Thanks guys!

Ah, I sure didn't read that correctly. I think a $20 for packaging the food will be fine.

I worked at applebees. the people who do the take out orders made min wage so tipping then as much as a server is not neccessary. it is their job to put your stuff in a bag and make sure the silverware and everything is in their. if you have a huge order I would say a few dollars would be nice.

and fyi, curbside workers dont put the food in containers the people who cook the food do. they just put the food in bags with all the extras.

I would think you could give them between $20-40 depending on the amount of food. Nothing big, but they are taking the time to put all the food into containers for you to transport and that takes time.
