Taco Bar vs. FH's BBQ... Price shopping Publix

L + R, on July 27, 2014 at 2:49 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

I wanted a taco bar. Much like the one pictured. I was going to have grilled shrimp, grilled chicken, and ground beef along with all pictured dressings/sauces, tortillas, etc. Churros and chocolate dipping sauce for dessert. We are having FH's favorite beer, Corona. Sangria mixed drink -obviously a theme going on here. Well, suddenly FH wants bbq instead. Ribs, chicken breasts, etc. I refused, my main argument being that it'll be too expensive. So a groomsman suggested we price out both menus and whoever has the cheapest we'll go with. I reluctantly agreed.... So now I'm off to price out each. Any tips for Publix shopping and saving on meat? That is the only supermarket nearby where we'll be. I've never shopped there before.

Chicken breasts with the ribs tend to be much cheaper. I don't know about ribs, though - ribs can get messy. Brisket will be easier to eat, but you really have to check the prices on brisket weekly. Sausage is also a good bet for barbecue. All in all, the meat might be cheaper than the tacos because of all the extras you'll have to get.

I might be biased, though. Our wedding was a barbecue with smoked brisket and turkey.

I've been in/to weddings with both. I preferred the taco bar.

I would prefer BBQ...only because our Americanized version of tacos SUCKS...unless you are gong authentic!

Here's something else to consider: It might be easier to do the taco bar. Barbecue takes time to do (and to do well), but the prep work for a taco bar is simple - and everyone makes their own.

We're doing a taco bar at our Mexican fiesta rehearsal dinner. Made sense since we are honeymooning to Cancun Smiley smile

I think the BBQ would probably be cheaper, but it would also probably be more time consuming. As a guest I would enjoy either.

Authentic...then YUM! Go with the taco bar, easier and different!

    Adding Churros, Sangria, Corona....yeah!

If you are doing authentic tacos with hand made tortillas I think it will be great! Condiments for taco bar are also easy to prep and refill as needed. I love BBQ but if it gets cold and you have to reheat although still tasty it can get dry or tough.

I'm also pro taco. So that's my vote. Plus, it's more personalized and not as messy. You can have people make salads if they are watching their weight, nachos if they want to, or just a regular taco how they want. Ribs they are stuck eating ribs with the sauce you chose. And they are SUPER messy.

Find someone with a Sam's Club membership. They have cheap meat and other things.

I love both, but given the choice, I would choose tacos. Every now and then I get in the mood for bbq, but I could eat tacos 5 times a week. Both will be messy, so that shouldn't be a deciding factor. Tacos would probably slow the line down a little with all the additional condiments.

I had wanted to do a taco bar. I was just going to precook the meats a few days before then throw it in crock pots to keep them warm. Condiments and toppings can be pre-made on trays and just pulled out the fridge before dinner. Logistically, it sounds pretty easy.

I vote for the Taco Bar! Plus all of the fixings will keep better out on the buffet line. Your choice of proteins (shrimp, chicken, and beef) sounds delicious!

We planned on having a local BBQ restaurant cater... I thought it would be cheap but ended up being $10 a person... affordable but not as cheap as I thought. Now I'm totally thinking DIY taco or fajita bar!!

@Kaesey, I made homemade tortillas last night for the first time with breakfast burritos, and OMG YUM! They turned out fantastic, so I'll definitely be making them.

Nice work, FH's having to fold, because ya'll are totally right Smiley winking I just emailed him the link to this thread! Smiley tongue

    Thanks ladies!
