Tacky or No?

Tosha, on October 1, 2019 at 9:21 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 17

I started a gofundme page for our honeymoon because we are paying for the wedding ourselves and cannot afford a honeymoon. We had planned to visit Puerto Rico with that savings and put the wedding off, but his grandpa is very sick and we really wanted to have the wedding before we lose him.

Is it tacky to ask for honeymoon donations when there are so many more deserving people that need money for more important causes?

Yes I think this is tacky. A honeymoon is a vacation- a luxury, not a necessity. IMO, gofundme is for medical bills and unexpected funeral/life expenses.

I agree with Sarah. GoFundMe is used way too often for things that are not financial necessities and instead used for fundraising things people just don't feel like paying for. If you can't afford the wedding and would rather pay for a honeymoon, just have a ceremony in a public park with very minimal costs that his grandfather and other family can attend.

Honestly, I'd never donate to a go fund me for a honeymoon. I see a dozen a day plastered everywhere and a honeymoon isn't a good reason. His family being sick is more understandable. Can you ask for cash gifts at the wedding instead?

We are doing a honeymoon fund just because we are in our 40's and have everything we need. It probably is tacky, but returning a bunch of stuff we don't need is a hassle we don't want to deal with. This is an option, but we made it clear no one HAS to donate.

Asking for money for a vacation is always tacky, yes.

My fiance is from Puerto Rico and he has a lot of family there that he has not been able to visit since moving here. We can't afford a destination wedding so that his family could be a part of it. I only wanted to find a way to include his family in our celebration.

Or you can have a small ceremony and spend the rest on going to see him? My dad has cancer and I might have to redirect wedding funds to help him. It sucks, but it's more important than a wedding

A honeymoon fund is different. I think that's fine because it's only your guests who normally are given the link to donate. I don't think that's tacky. If OP is only giving it to the guests then my answer changes and I think that's totally fine

Our wedding is very minimal with my family helping as their gift to us. My family can't afford to donate cash either but they are donating time and serves. We are not hiring any vendors.

It’s extremely tacky and distasteful. Rework your budget and fit the trip in somehow.

I probably would just not do a gofundme or a registry at all. People attending the wedding will get the hint, and gift cash.

I absolutely agree with PPs that a "gofundme" is completely inappropriate for this purpose. Personally, I'm not a fan of Honeyfund type sites/request either, but that's a know your crowd-type question. However, if you're having a small wedding and you already know your family will not be in a position to gift you with cash, I'm not sure how realistic it is to think you'll receive much from a Honeyfund or any other "nudge" you might give guests toward your wanting cash as a wedding gift. If you don't think your guests are likely in a position to give you money, asking them for it won't likely result in you receiving much. The logic doesn't make sense, unless I'm missing something. (Any registry, including a Honeyfund, should only be shared with people invited to the wedding. It will still be very "tacky" if you try to make an end-run around the "gofundme" attempt and do something like post your Honeyfund request to people not invited to the actual wedding. I'm not implying that's what you're planning, but I don't seen how else it would seem that a Honeyfund will result in cash your guests may not be planning to give you.)
