Table numbers

Rachd, on November 15, 2022 at 1:37 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 8
Is anyone NOT doing table numbers and a seating chart? We are having a small-ish ceremony/reception, around 55-65 people, all of which will be family and close friends so other than having 2 tables reserved for wedding party and parents I don't really see the point of telling everyone else where to sit. I want everyone to enjoy themselves so I want them to be able to sit with whomever they will enjoy conversing with for the evening....

Even with a smaller guest count, I would recommend having assigned tables. Guests aren't good at seating themselves and as a result you'd have to provide extra tables and chairs. You also could have guests moving things like plates, utensils and chairs to create their own tables or some guests seated alone whereas other tables are overcrowded.

I agree with pp. Even with a "small" group of people who know each other, they are not going to efficiently seat themselves into groups of 8 or however many your table size requires. It truly is MUCH better that you figure out which table to seat people at and let them know the expectation with a table chart or escort cards. Without assigned seating, some venues actually require the customer to plan for up to 25% more space/seats/placesettings/etc., because people will do weird things.

I've been to weddings without seating charts and it was fine because they did a buffet dinner. Didn't really notice or experience any of the issues listed in other comments. We were trying to not do a seating chart but got sucked into it because it is much easier to coordinate. plated dinner at our venue.

If you don’t do table assignments I would just add more tables and chairs. For example 60 people would mean 6 tables of 10. I would instead rent 10 tables of 10.

I'm the type due to past family drama between my aunt's that I didn't want to create drama. However due to us doing a played dinner with options I'm having to do so. I could do buffet style but then the cost goes up. So depending on venue you choose or have chosen would also help determine that as well.

We’re having about 50 people as well. I don’t think I want to stress myself out with doing a seating chart

If you don't assign people to tables, you'll have to plan on having additional tables since guests won't break themselves into groups of however many seats per table. You'll also have to deal with people leaving open seats between them or not filing tables fully so they can stay with their group. That means more linens, place settings, centerpieces, etc., which will drive up your costs.
