Table numbers...do I need them?

Crystal L., on March 15, 2015 at 3:29 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 16

If we are not doing a specific seating chart, and just letting people sit wherever they want, so we really need table numbers? I've seen a lot of posts about table numbers lately, and it got me thinking! I wanna make sure that if we need them, I start on them now! =)

If you don't have assigned tables I don't think there would be any reason to have them.

If you are doing open seating there is no reason for table numbers. That said, you should still have tables reserved for family so they can sit together. I went to a wedding recently where it was open seating and no reserved tables for the family. I was in the back of the room and the MOG was so busy with wedding logistics she didn't "save" a seat for herself in the front. She sat way in the back with me and a few other random people and couldn't hear/see anything that was happening in the front. So, just make sure you have obvious tables for family - as they should have a "front row seat" of what is happening.

@ Crystal are you doing buffet style dinner or a plated dinner? We aren't doing a seating chart either but we are having buffet style and we don't want huge lines of people waiting for food. So we are doing table numbers so the MC can call out table numbers to go to the buffet.

Yes you should if you should. I'm not doing a seating chart either, but you still need it to call tables for the buffet. You don't want people to randomly go to the buffet for food. It would be a mess trust me. I learned that lesson at my daughter sweet 16

My experience was different.with a buffet at several weddings. they didn't announce over the speakers that table 8,9 and 10 should go...there was a coordinator walking around telling the guests when they should go. Maybe you could ask the venue or caterer?

I'm not doing numbers, I'm giving the tables names of places, but same principle applies, the name will be called, and that table can go get food.

You don't need table #s if you are not having assigned seating, but it would be nice to place something different at each table so that your guests remember where they are sitting. @kassie has a great idea with naming each table. Maybe you could even put different pictures of you and you FH framed at each table. When they call guests to the buffet maybe you can make it fun like have the guests that have been married 40 years or more go up first, then send up guests that have been married 25 years or more, etc. etc. you could end it with couples that are engaged or not married.

If there is no seating chart I would say that they're not necessary.

Agreed with the majority, if there is no assigned seating then table identifiers are not necessary. Unless of course you're having a buffet and it's being organized by "Table #1 - go get your food now.", etc.

Hey! I know the post is older, but I personally used them because you can pick who sits by each other and can sit people next to each other that like each other. Strategically combine groups you know will get along well. It allows you to separate continual family drama/rifts also. I got mine on Amazon here and they are actually discounted! well worth the price: https://goo.gl/9F2pDr

The only other reason numbers would be great for is to control traffic at the buffet!
