Table Cakes

Savannah, on October 12, 2021 at 8:47 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 3 10

Hey ladies, I've been thinking about doing individual table cakes as part of my centerpieces as I don't have a huge day-of team, and then just having a two tier for the sweetheart table. Is it taboo to have/expect people to slice their own cake? My tables seat 8 so it's an easy cut, and we could just pass out stacks of cake plates and cutters at cake time.

What do you guys think?

I think that's a cute idea. They could be precut (do with wire or NEW fishing string so it's a clean cut) at the table and covered with a cake dome to keep them fresh. I love the idea.

Taboo or not you can definitely do it since this decision won't make the marriage valid or not lol.
Plus it's an offbeat idea and while some guests may disapprove, at worst they will quickly get over it 😉.

I think this is a cute idea! I would maybe pre-cut them ahead of time just to make it easier for everyone, but otherwise this is a creative idea!

I think this actually is generally expected with table cakes.

I was just reading a post on the Wedding Shaming Reddit where someone ranted about a couple having 22 table cakes and it was assumed guests were serving themselves, but they instead paraded all of the cakes into the kitchen and wanted the staff to cut them come cake time.

I don't think it's taboo, but it does sound potentially very messy and unhygienic.

No not taboo but may get messy. You can always have them pre-cut but still displayed. One of our cakes was pre-cut and still looked very pretty on display.

I don't think it's taboo. I'm thinking of doing something a little similar, but I'm having our baker make cupcakes and package them individually, then they will be at each place setting as a "favor" of sorts. Guests can eat them or take them with.

The only thing that is taboo is making your guests uncomfortable. The cake presentation has nothing to do with guests’ comfort. The idea is cute.

I have seen pictures of this and the catering staff had a knife on the table to cut with. Guests can get a second slice if they choose, no different from a multi tiered cake. With table cakes, they have the option of larger slices which are normal birthday cake size slices. Definitely do not have the cakes taken to the kitchen to be cut. Let guests who are adults serve themselves like they would the buffet line.
Something I have heard about on the Wedding Shaming Reddit and would never do is to have each cake be a different flavor so that guests are encouraged to go to other tables if they don’t like what is offered at their own table. That oversteps into taboo territory because comfort is being compromised.
