Switching Makeup Artist - Help!

Lauren, on June 2, 2022 at 4:42 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 7

A few months ago, I reached out to a makeup artist that checked most of my boxes, but I could only find a handful of reviews for her (no bad ones, just not a lot of reviews posted). Her website was decent and she was in my budget. However, I think I jumped the gun and booked her because she was in my budget and I'm having second thoughts now that I've found a makeup artist that checks every box I have.

I never signed a formal contract or paid a deposit with my current artist - I did sign essentially a "contract" to reserve my date in March, but as of today, a formal contract has not been provided. I contacted her yesterday to inquire about the formal contract to at least compare, and she said she wants to schedule my trial first so the date can be added to the contract, and she also needs my contact information/mailing address. Note, I already provided that information back in March with the form I originally signed.

I'm wondering if anyone else has ever switched vendors without any "bad blood" or deposits paid - I'm happy to pay a cancellation fee if need be (even though I haven't paid anything yet), but I feel bad because she hasn't actually done anything wrong. Any advice? Side note, my wedding isn't until April 2023, so I wouldn't be backing out at the last minute. Thank you!!

Normally you don’t sign a contract before getting a trial and without a deposit and formal contract, you are not officially booked in anyone’s calendar. Just the booking process alone sounds stressful and disjointed so I would get a trial with another makeup artist before you switch or sign any contract. Then let her know you decided to go with someone else. It’s a very common thing to do.

I felt the same as far as feeling disjointed - the paper I signed in March "held my date" with her, but nothing else was paid/signed. And even so, that happened literally the first week of March, and I just followed up this week for a status update on a formal contract. I can't exactly fault her though, as I didn't think about it either until I found this new artist.

Does the contract you signed reserving the date have anything in it that speaks to cancelations? If not, then you don't have any obligations to the first makeup artist. People cancel weddings, postpone, have changed circumstances, etc. all the time. At the end of the day, you're paying for a service for one of the most important days of your life, so you should work with someone whose work you like and you can afford. Of course, you should still be polite about it and express that you appreciate the artist's time, but you are giving her plenty of time to find another client to fill the date with.

The cancellation clause says that cancellation means loss of retainer, but I haven't paid anything yet.

It sounds like I should do a "thank you for your time, but I'm moving in a different direction" email?

Is the retainer amount or date/ timeframe it's due spelled out someplace? You may be on the hook for that if so. Regardless, a polite email would be sufficient to get that ball rolling. I would recommend making sure this other artist is available before ending things with the first one though.

The retainer amount isn't listed, only that if cancelled I lose the retainer. I did double check that the other artist is available!
