Switching from high heels to flats

Bethany , on March 13, 2017 at 2:17 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

Hey guys, not sure if anyone has posted about this but I really want to wear heels for the wedding and pictures but I know I won't be able to last the whole night in heels(since I never wear them in daily life for more than a few hours) I was planning on switching into flats or something more comfortable a little bit into the reception, however I was curious about how this would work with my alterations... has anyone had an issue with getting the dress altered and then dragging if they change into lower shoes later?

I wore 4 inch heels because I refused to pay $250 to have my dress hemmed. By the time I switched to flats I lost the ability to care about what the bottom of my dress looked like. Pictures were done and it was time to relax.

I think you could get your bustle to be at the right length for your flats.

I was thinking the same thing because I have wedding slippers that I know I need to put on after getting to the reception. I would wear both high and low shoes to my fitting and have them measure both to your liking and then make your decision from there.

Have the dress hemmed for your heels, and bustled while you're in flats.

I'm in the same boat. I just couldn't wrap my mind around 300 to hem my dress. So I spent 45 on 4in heels. I'm going to be changing to flats too. I'm sure by the time I do get to change, I'll be all out of fucks to give

You have the dress hemmed to your heels and then bustled to your flats.

Then change into your flats when you bustle the dress...aka wait until after those things to do your bustle.

I wanted to do the same until I found super comfy heels that didn't bother my feet at all. They were pricey but worth it. The brand is Gabor & they are actually a wedge. If that sounds like something you'd consider, footsmart.com also sells comfy dress shoes.

I've been wondering this same thing! Can they really bustle your dress to be shorter in the front too?! That's awesome. Unfortunately even with 4" heels I still need a few inches hemmed. The joys of being short!

Any alterations person worth their salt will hem to your flats, not your heels. Bustling the front of your dress will give the dress an odd shape and all your reception candids and first dance photos will have you in an odd-looking dress.

Your best option is to go with a lower heel, then flats or go with high heels and then a lower heel for later. If it's only an inch or two difference, it won't matter and your dress can be hemmed in the middle. But if you go from 5" heels to flats, that's just going to look weird no matter what you do.

Anyone looking for the wedge flips take a look at JCPenney. They have a bunch of really cute ones. I bought a pair and they are comfy. They have lots of sparkly ones for wedding dresses too

@elizabeth - I figured that would be the case...I couldn't picture how a back bustle would change the length in the front. Good to know that just a few inch difference really won't change much when you change shoes. I'll have to try it out at alterations.

If you aren't set on flats, ballroom dance shoes could be a good alternative. You can get them in the same height as your regular shoes, but they are more comfy. (And not too expensive if you stick to the basic brands)

If you really want flats, you're best sticking to a lower (3 or less inches) heel and then hemming the dress to the flats. The height difference will be subtle, and your dress won't drag once you take off your shoes.

I'm doing something similar. I'm wearing flats for the ceremony and reception. But there's a few pictures that I really wanted to wear heels for, so I'm getting a cheaper pair of heels to wear JUST for pictures. That being said, dress will be hemmed to fit my flats.
