Swing Dancing Reception

Paige L., on January 17, 2017 at 7:53 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

So I and my FH just got engaged and haven't set a firm date for our wedding yet, however we know it will be a morning wedding and think we know what we want to do for our reception!

Both he and I are avid swing dancers and we love to swing dance to live music. After asking around to several ballroom studios in the area around our reception, we found a lovely woman who would be willing to come teach a 30-60 minute swing dancing lesson at our reception. In addition, we also found a great live swing band to play live music during and after the lesson so the guests could practice their new moves.

Would you enjoy that activity at a wedding reception? It will be a morning/afternoon wedding, so there won't be any dancing late into the night, but I don't know how guests might feel about a swing dance instead of a DJ.

Ehhh...if it's not really my "thing," I wouldn't be into it. I barely dance as it is. I don't participate in line dances as weddings, so I can't imagine myself wanting to participate in this. Most of the time I just want to mingle and dance at my own pace.

It's definitely a "know your crowd" type of thing though.

Maybe instead of a lesson, you and your husband just do a swing dance as your first dance?

That's such a cool idea. I say she can teach them during cocktail hour that way they can practice while there's background music being played and the ones willing to join can. Congrats btw. Sounds like a happening party.

It might be fun depending on your crowd. I personally would love to go to a wedding like that.

Hell yes! If you invite me I will come and dance to my hearts content!

FH and I are also avid ballroom dancers (swing is fh' favorite) and we are having a ton of dancers come to our wedding! We are having a lesson as part of the rehearsal dinner for our families and then maybe again during cocktail hour!

Thank you guys so much for the advice!! I think swing dancing it is. Good thought about making sure the guests know it is optional, I'll definitely do that.

I think it's a know your crowd type of thing. I wouldn't be a huge fan of something like that taking up so much time at a wedding. I'm not a great dancer and a 60 minute lesson isn't going to change that lol

I would enjoy this too, but my FH would not take part. I went to a wedding with dancing and they hired a few men to dance with the women whose husbands wouldn't dance. I loved it because I finally got to dance! So did many other women there whose husbands don't dance. So, I'd say YES to swing dancing but also suggest you hire male dancers Smiley smile

I love to dance. I teach a dance fitness class once a week, and take trainings every couple of months.

But I would not like this at a wedding unfortunately. I don't want a dance lesson, I want to be able to dance freely, and on my own.

As others have said, this is a know your crowd type of thing. If you think YOUR guests will enjoy it, go 'head.
