Sweep train shortened to tea length?

Rose, on November 4, 2018 at 7:12 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4
Hi all, I really wanted a tea length dress but couldn't find any that I liked, so after look it at hundreds of dresses I bought this one (the image on the model). I love it, and figured I'd be okay with wearing full-length. I took it to a seamstress to get it taken in and asked about shortening, and she said it would look weird shortened because of all the extra fabric in the back (which I assumed). She recommended a bustle which is of course better than not bustling but I just want to be sure... I'm just wondering if anybody has shortened a dress with a sweep train and how it looks if so!

This is not a dress style that will take to 'shortening' - the seamstress is correct, the balance of the skirt fabric would be off in the back.

Tea-length dresses are almost universally full-skirted, either with crinoline to flare it out or left loose to swirl and move. This skirt hugs the body down to the thighs and the proportion of looseness at the bottom would be off.

Agree with PP. This style dress would not lend to shortening well. I had the same problem looking for tea length. I finally found one I loved but I was also considering shortening a full length dress. One seamstress I talked with said the best style to shorten would be a ball gown since they already have the full skirt, you're just shortening it.

I suppose if you opted to shorten it where it comes in at the knees, so it’s more of a pencil skirt it might work... but idk if that’s the length or style your looking for

Hi Rose! If turned into a tea-length dress, the back of this dress would flare out a bit, being that there is more fabric past the knee of the skirt. If you don't mind the idea of this, you could talk to your seamstress about making this change. It is a beautiful dress and I love the back, lacey, sheer details. Smiley heart
