Supervisor....again

Merline, on June 19, 2019 at 3:36 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7
Hey! So I'm back lol. I've posted before about working in a small offsite location of 4 people (including myself). Well I plan on inviting my 2 coworkers and their spouses, but not my supervisor. Well the other day I was working on a project with my coworker and she was asking me about wedding plans as we were working. Well as I walk back in my office, my supervisor comes in and tells me she got a couple's shower invitation, and she and her husband are both invited and if that is how young people do it now. And I just told her I guess. Then she proceeds to ask me about my plans and wedding date (mind you she has never and we are about 8 months away). I did not and do not plan on inviting her and told her the bare minimum of details. She then asked if it would be okay if she threw me a work shower and invited co workers from our main and other offsite offices and a few clients. I told her that was not necessary. Well now clients are asking me where I'm registered so they can get items that I want. My mom thinks that I should add her to our guest list because she is doing this "nice gesture". Well our guest list is at max limit. I do have a couple I could remove to add my supervisor and her husband, but I just cant get over the way she treated me when I first started with the organization. What would you all do?!? TIA 💜

You can accept the work shower without inviting your supervisor. It is totally okay to have a work shower but not invite everyone attending to the wedding. This is one of the cases where these events are separate. She offered to throw it for you, it would be polite to accept.

I wouldn't make any work guest list decisions until RIGHT before you send invites. People switch jobs, move, get fired, etc. so even talking about it with the 4 employees you want to invite seems risky to me. Your relationship may also improve with your supervisor in the next 8 months.

Lol it won't. I've been here since 2015. She just started being "nicer" to me maybe the last month or so. I was just hoping she would retire since she's 70!!!

Yes more and more clients have been asking. She asked me again to make sure I wouldn't be on vacation (which she approves lol). I told her I appreciate it. My mom told me to accept the shower lol.

I don't know, i'm kind of the type that think unless you have a ton of coworkers then all or none should be invited. if you have 5 coworkers then it's weird to only invite 4 out of 5 kind of thing.

I think it depends. I have 4 coworkers.
Only one is invited. The other 3 are college age, and I'm just not so cool that they would want to spend a Saturday hanging out with me. Lol.

Have the college age kids said anything to you? My 2 coworkers are my age or like 10 years older. While my supervisor is 70 (71 by the wedding date). She has mentioned retiring in December but she hasn't started the process..
