Summer Dinner Ideas

Katie, on December 4, 2020 at 1:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

My FH and I are trying to decide what to have chose for dinner options at our wedding. The reception dinner will be around 5-6pm on a Sunday evening in June. June in North Carolina is typically quite warm (in the 80s and humid), so we were thinking a lighter, summer meal would be appealing. We want to avoid the cheaper catered options (pastas and bbq), but not break the bank.

With COVID, we are the amount of people allowed at the reception is limited, but ideally we would chose to have around 100 guests. However, if this number must be reduced, we would prefer to chose a chicken & beef option that everyone can have, rather than the either/or option or just one entrée option.

Suggestions and previous experiences??

Do a Yelp search in that area for caterers. Read the menus online and meet with them to discuss pricing, tastings, etc

So far we have met with two local caterers for tastings. The food has been good, but nothing we have tried has been amazing or made us want to ensure it was a part of our wedding. They have said that they are open to making anything, so I'm trying to come up with fun summer food ideas.

With a duel plate, you have high risk for wasted food. Even though it may feel like you're doing a good thing, it tends to backfire. Some people don't eat beef at all and others do not eat chicken in banquet settings because it is difficult to cook thoroughly/safely.

Also, it never hurts to ask a small group of people close to you what their preferences are since they will be the ones attending.

If the food doesn't blow you away, keep looking. Browse summer menus online for ideas. Hawaiian restaurants offer catering and their food is definitely summery, so that's a starting. What is your vision of summer food? That can cover so many things.

I hadn't thought about the amount of wasted food! That is a very good point. One of the caterers we met with said the portions of beef and chicken would be smaller to accommodate the budget and perhaps amount of waste.

We will definitely ask our close family and friends for preferences, however I think their answer will be that it is our wedding and that we should decide lol.

Right now, I am thinking my vision would be grilled food (chicken, beef, fresh veggies) with salad and appropriate sides. Thank you for helping me and my thought process. There are so many decisions and choices for one day!!

We got married in Pennsylvania on the hottest day of the year last year. It was over 90 degrees. We had three passed apps during cocktail hour which included mango chicken bites, tomato basil grilled cheese squares, and fried ravioli with marinara sauce. Then we had a salad course. We choose to serve Caesar salad. Then we had a buffet/station style meal. We have two stations. which were a carving station and pasta station. Guests had their choice of carved turkey or prime rib and their choice of penne noodles or tortellini with either alfredo or vodka sauce. We also had sides of mashed potatoes with gravy and grilled veggies. We had a candy bar that was open during the entire reception. We also had a late night snack which was a nacho bar.

We got married in July in Alabama and had sliders, pimento cheese bites (OMG they were amazing), a corn salad, a mashed potato bar, and kebabs - it was a little more upscale than BBQ, but came with a reasonable price point.

When I think of summer foods, I’m thinking of kabobs (beef or chicken). There’s grilled veggies & if you put pineapple on them...yummy!

Yes!! Grilled food sounds very summery to me too! I will definitely have to see what caterers could potentially do that on site
