Suits? Help!

Emily, on December 28, 2019 at 8:09 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 15
Where is everyone getting their FH suit or outfit from? I'm completely clueless when it comes to suits or even where to start looking besides somewhere like men's warehouse. So, I guess I'm asking 2 things.

1. Can someone explain the differences in suits a groom wears at a wedding? We were thinking something vintage-esque but not super tuxedo formal. It's a garden wedding. I'm hoping to find it in a navy blue.

2. Where did everyone start looking for suits? My FH has no opinion and has 0 knowledge so he's no help. We can't have him waiting on me in a tshirt and Jean's either. Did you rent it for the day or did some of you opt to buy a suit that he can ware again for other events?

My fiancé has an appointment with Indochino in March. They were recommended to me by a friend of mine who just recently got married. Indochino, if there’s one in your area, does custom suits for a really good price in a bunch of colors and styles. We are opting to buy a suit he can wear again for the same price it would cost for him to rent one.

My fiancée and the groomsman got their suits at Kohl’s! My fiancée really likes Hagar and they carry that brand there. Men’s warehouse is also a popular place

Our wedding was formal so the guys worn tuxes. We rented them from Men's Warehouse. My dad and brother had a horrible experience with them. They live about 2 hours one way from them so they took off work to go pick up their tuxes. When they got there they learned the truck carrying them was in an accident and they didn't know where the truck was or when it would arrive. The sales people were incredibly rude. My dad and brother expressed concern because they wanted to make sure the tuxes fit ahead of time, but were told even if the tuxes had arrived it was too late for them to do anything about it. They went to pick them up 4 days prior to the event. They normally have you come get them early in case there is a problem with the size of the clothing so they can get the correct size within time for the wedding. My dad and brother left really upset. Later that day they got a call the tuxes were ready for pick up, but they were already home. They couldn't go back to the store until the day before the wedding. When they got there, the sales person changed the size of my brother's shirt because she didn't think the right size was ordered. They luckily had the correct size in stock so that's what he worn. My dad had lost a bunch of weight and his pants were way too lose, but they told him there was nothing they could do about it. He ended up having to use pins to keep his pants up. If we had thought about it, we would have gotten him suspenders. My husband realized the morning of the wedding that the shirt he was given was the wrong size and my brother's pocket square was missing. My husband's friend who wasn't in the wedding went to the closest Men's Warehouse (a different one than where the tuxes came from) and got my husband the correct size shirt and a pocket square for my brother. The Men's Warehouse we got the tuxes from also tried telling us that my husband's tux was at a different location. I have no clue if it was just that specific location, but I definitely wouldn't go back to them for tuxes after what we went through. We picked Men's Warehouse because our bridal party lived in several different states so it was the easiest option. The Black Tux is an online option that has really good reviews. The only issue is they don't have tuxes or suits in children's size so we couldn't use them because we had a ring bearer who worn a tux and a 15 year old groomsman who is really small so I don't know if the men's sizes would have fit him. My brother-in-law used a chain that was local to his area. He had his groomsmen go get measured and send him their measurements. I know the jacket my husband originally tried on from them didn't fit, but they had the jacket in stock in his size so he was able to get a jacket that properly fit unlike with Men's Warehouse who couldn't get my dad pants that fit him. The reason the jacket didn't fit my husband was because he had gained weight in between being measured and needing the jacket.

That sounds like a nightmare! I went into the Men's Warehouse that we have here and I was so overwhelmed with the choices it was worse than my dress shopping! I hated the experience going in the store, I couldn't imagine what it would have been like if I had gone through all of that!

I've gotten on google to try and find pictures of suits that I like and we've both agreed that a "morning suit" fits perfectly for the theme of our wedding and the style we are going for... I'm almost positive there isn't a retailer that sells a suite like that here but I can probably find a custom made one online if I searched. Has anyone gone through that route before and had their suite made without trying it on?

We’re getting ours through Generation Tux, which is a rental website. We chose it because it had the most options, we liked the look, and it was pretty affordable! We decided to rent so everyone in the wedding party could easily match down to the shoes and all. It’s super easy- you can just invite the groomsmen onto the website and assign them an outfit and you get updates when they pick up their outfit and return it.

My FH is wearing a vest and has a merlot pocket square to distinguish him from the groomsmen. Picture below!!

We are going for a more casual vibe so we went to many different stores, including men’s warehouse to try to find him a nice button up shirt and some off white dress pants. Surprisingly, we ended up going with Banana Republic. He got some chino pants and one of their dressy shirts. It’s great for our beach wedding!

So there's probably half a dozen places to rent men's suits in my town. My fiance disliked his experience with 2 of them. So we picked the place my bridesmaids gowns came from.

We opted for rent, because he was in a wedding a few years ago that did buy, and it cost him $300.
Pick a place, go in, they'll give you a catalog. If they're good at what they do, they'll explain everything. And guys rent shoes too. Sounds insane to me, but I didn't know that.

Our bridesmen ordered their suits from The Groomsman Suit https://www.thegroomsmansuit.com/. They even ordered their suspenders there. It is an online company, but they allow you to try the entire suit on at home, for free, before deciding to purchase. We could not have been more happy with how they turned out. Our guys wore navy and they looked SO good. They also have two different shades of navy to choose from, which was nice. They are very fairly priced and I highly recommend them!

My FH is ordering a 3-piece suit from Indochino. They make made-to-measure suits and have a ton of colors and styles.

For rentals Men's Warehouse is a safe bet, especially if you have groomsmen in different parts of the country, since there tend to be Men's Warehouse stores all over. MW deal with wedding parties all the time. Any independent suit store will also likely have suits you can buy as well as a rental program. Rental suits/tuxes are usually around $200 (but that includes all of the extras), so that's why some people opt to buy a suit for a bit more money.

Common suit colors include black, gray (any shade from light to dark), navy, and blue. Gray and new navy (brighter navy than traditional midnight navy, which almost can look black) are probably the most versatile. A 3-piece suit consists of a jacket, vest, and pants, and they can be worn with all 3 pieces, just a jacket and pants (no vest), just vest and pants (no jacket), or just pants. You also need to buy a shirt, tie or bow tie, and pocket square separately. Suspenders are optional, and usually worn if you are going for a no jacket, no vest look but want to dress up just pants. You'll also need dress socks, a belt, and shoes to complete the look.

We are buying the ties and pocket squares for our groomsmen to keep. I don't think we care about matching socks, but some people really like to coordinate those details as well.

Tuxedos are different from suits - the main most obvious difference is that they have satin lapels. They are dressier and more appropriate for a formal or black tie wedding, or evening ceremony. They are probably overly formal for most daytime outdoor weddings.

I personally would not shop for a suit for my FH. He's asked my opinion and included me on some of his trips to browse different suits, but ultimately the decision is his. Even if he didn't know anything about suits, I would find it really unfair if I needed to be the one to do all the research and make the decisions about what he is going to wear. Have your FH go into a suit store and talk to a salesperson. You can go with him if you want, but he should be a part of the process and the whole burden shouldn't fall on you. When you go to the store you can ask a lot of questions - the sales people are usually pretty helpful, even when they are being super sales-y. Your FH will need to get measured anyway, so he might as well be a part of the process from the beginning.

We actually went to Macy's and found a really affordable suit for the groom (jacket and slacks- much cheaper off-the-rack than Men's Warehouse and more color options, tbh) and we ended up ordering the groomsmen's jackets through Macy's as well (we're doing matching jackets, mismatched pants) ! If you're going vintage, maybe you don't even need a full suit, but instead could consider just doing blazers? Or vests?

My dad recommended Jos A Banks. FH and I actually went yesterday and ended up ordering him a custom 3-pc suit (we both have issues buying anything off-the-rack and it was actually cheaper to custom order than to pay for each alteration individually). Half came form our wedding budget and half came from his clothing budget since we decided to go with something he could continue to wear for work as needed. He's only going to wear the pants and vest at the wedding (mid-gray with a grey/teal/sage paisley lining). We still have to get a shirt, and decide on a tie (yes/no, style). But if you can swing it or have a reason to invest, I'd recommend them. It did take about 2 hrs to get all his measurements in, but it'll only take a month or so for the suit to come in.

My fiancé went to Men’s Wearhouse as well and is renting the navy blue suit. He was in a wedding where they had to buy custom suits and it was $450, so we didn’t want to do that to the groomsmen. Much cheaper to rent a suit. I wasn’t overwhelmed by the choices at all as I already had an idea of what we wanted. Our wedding is in Feb so we haven’t actually picked up the suits yet but we haven’t had any problems with them so far. My fiancé had been in several wedding where they rented from men’s Wearhouse and has never had any problems.

Hey Emily! I think any suit can fit a garden wedding as long as it is not green, so a navy blue vintage-Esque tuxedo would be fine. To answer the second question, my son attended so many weddings as a ring bearer, so I bought boys suits for him. However, if you want everyone at your wedding to follow a particular dress code, it would be best to rent. But if it's only for your husband, you better buy to keep a memory.
