Suggestion for a cocktail hour

Ariella, on September 23, 2020 at 3:37 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15
I need ideas on different versions of “cocktail hours” and thoughts on what I’ve liked as a “cocktail” hour (cocktail is in quotes cause we are not serving alc)
First, off we are planning for no more than 45 minutes for pictures, hopefully less since we are doing most before the wedding.
Does this time in between -have- to involve “real food” such as appetizers? Or as a guest would you be annoyed if there was a dessert bar? Ive came across the idea of a Candy/ dessert bar and I love it! I think it’s so cute. Drop your suggestion on what you think could be in place of a cocktail hour, what fun games could be played And other thoughts! Open to whatever. (Reminder that i am not wanting to spend a whole lot on this area of the wedding)

The only issue that I possibly see is that cocktail hour usually happened before dinner. Do you think your guest would want to eat some dessert before dinner?

You could always do fruits, cheese & crackers if you don’t want to actually spend money on real food. I think having some dessert is fine but maybe not all dessert.

A dessert but no dinner wedding reception is fine, between usual meal times like an afternoon reception. But not a dessert first for cocktail time, then a meal or appetizers for food after dessert.

We did cookies and candy at our wedding too!! Due to COVID we had everything individually wrapped. My sweet MIL headed up the cookies and family made several kinds. Favor bags from Zazzle and MIL made labels for each bag on what kind of cookie they were. Various small businesses made candy, baklava (I’m Greek), toffees, salt water taffy (we had a coastal theme). It was a hit!!

Are you going to serve a meal at your reception? If so, I wouldn't serve a dessert bar during cocktail hour. You don't have to have anything elaborate, platters of meats, cheeses, and crackers would be fine for appetizers.

We are having a dry wedding as well and we are having a lemonade bar instead! There will be different syrups and fruit to mix and match! IT fits with our theme perfectly and will be so much fun! (Hopefully it won't be too cold haha!) As for appetizers, maybe you could have a couple options of each, like some cookies and some mini sandwiches!

As a guest, I would not want to eat Candy prior to my dinner. I would suggest having the candy bar after dinner as part of your dessert. You could do a “mocktail” hour instead where you serve non-alcoholic drinks. I would suggest some sort of food as appetizers while your guest wait for dinner to begin. It can be something small.

I agree with others in that I wouldn't really want to eat candy/sweets before dinner.

I would serve something and have it set up to encourage some kind of mingling.

I went to a wedding that just had chips and salsa on the reception tables and it was pretty boring and felt like it took forever for the bride and groom to get back from pictures.

At my wedding we had a fruit and veggie display along with the bar. We had out the guest book for everyone to sign and music. We didn't have chairs and some of the older guests started complaining. So, what ever you do make sure you have at least a few chairs so people have someplace to sit.

I also went to a wedding where they had just some cheese and crackers with fruit display. She also had yard games set up to keep people occupied.

Yes, I will definitely have table games so no one is bored. I’d hate to spend all this money for people just to be bored. Thanks for the reminder!!
