"Suggested" Maitre d Tip of $1,200 ?

Krista, on August 30, 2021 at 11:29 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 7

Hi everyone! My fiancé and I settled on a venue that we absolutely love and has fantastic reviews as far as customer service, but during the tour of the venue and going over numbers, the salesperson told us that a $1,200 tip for the Maitre D is not included in the package but is customary.

For some background info, we're in the greater NYC area where the average wedding cost is $30k (which is about what we are spending). So taking that into consideration, do you think $1,200 is excessive?

And for the record -- I have no doubt that Maitre D's work their butts off and I'm in no way diminishing their value, but $1,200 for 7-8 hours of work sounds off to me, I know doctors and lawyers that don't make that kind of money.

On the other hand, like many of you, I've never planned a wedding and have no idea what is normal / what is not.

Thanks for your help/advice!

Sounds like a ton. I’m not familiar with maitre D, What exactly will they do? Also if it’s so customary they should just included in the service price.

From what I can find online. What seems to be customary is tipping the maître d’ $1-5 per guests in attendance at your wedding. So it really depends on how big your event is. If you are having 250 people, the $1200 would be within that range.

It’s suggested, meaning it’s not what you have to pay. I got married in the same area. Our venue suggested we tip 3-5$pp, we settled on 4.

Tip what you can afford and what you think they earned.

That definitely seems like a big tip but it also depends on your guest count and what you are having them do. Tip what you can afford!

Is the Maitre D the Banquet Manager of serving staff or the Event Coordinator who works with all the vendors that day? Or is this person your Bridal Attendant and all of the above. I married in NYC and had 2 of the 3 but the venue paid them.
