Hi all,

I actually just created profile to ask about this topic. Let me start off by saying that my FH and I were planning on doing a money dance as a way to interact with other guests as we won’t have time to do a receiving line (our ceremony and reception are at the same venue, so we are on a tight timeline to take pictures). Also, this was something all of my family members expected us to do, so I didn’t even know it was controversial until I came across a story about it on Facebook last night. Until then, I just thought it was something that everyone did at a wedding reception.

After discovering this, I asked my FMIL her thoughts. Apparently where they are from (they moved to my area when my FH was young), it is frowned upon. Since I don’t want to offend their side of the family, I’m not sure what to do. It was something FH and I were looking forward to, but we don’t want to come off as rude.

For those of you who have had a money dance, do you have any suggestions to make it more fun for guests? I’ve thought about inviting everyone up to dance and just allowing those who want to donate do so.

Let me also say say that I’m having a small bridal shower (only about 20 people), and we are not setting up a Honeyfund, so we aren’t trying to be money grubbing. Also, our reception and cocktail hour are completely open bar, so no one will have to spend money on drinks. I only mention this because I saw other threads where people complained that money dances are in bad taste since guests also have to pay for drinks.

My brother and sister-in-law did a money dance at their reception, but it was announced that the money would be going to the bride's favorite charity, "---------," and they did in fact donate the money to that group.

I was in a wedding that had a money dance, and at the time I had no idea what it was. lol. The DJ was someone everyone in the family used and I don't think he announced it, he just played a song that they recognized as the money dance song. Those of us not in the family thought it was just a fun dance (we may have been drinking) and didn't give money. In fact, some were so confused they started picking up the money for themselves! lol. If I saw one today I wouldn't be offended but I wouldn't participate. I would just rely on good music and that open bar to get people out there!

I am having a dollar dance. In my family and at almost every wedding I've ever been to there is always a dollar dance. I always love the dollar dance because it gives you time alone with both the bride and the groom (lots of people will dance with both). If I go to a wedding without it I'm super disappointed. I talked about it with my FH. His family does not typically do this, but felt they would be okay with it (they are a pretty relaxed crowd). I know this is not a very popular opinion, but it is mine. I figure it's only a dollar and if people don't want to do it they definitely aren't pushed to do it. I would probably have the DJ make an announcement that it is a tradition in your family and invite those who want to participate.

No offense to the poster above about having a dollar dance but contributing to a charity is even worse!! "Open your wallets to dance with us while we pat ourselves on the back for donating to a charity!"

Dollar dances, like tossing the bouquet, have always made me uncomfortable. "Hey you! Yeah you SINGLE WOMAN! Get out here to catch some flowers so you won't be a spinster. When you are done, get out your wallet so you can pay to dance with the groom."

    Ugh.

Monopoly money!! Maybe make cute little envelopes with monopoly or fake money in them! It honors the tradition without looking like you're asking for money!-- also, those on your slide may just slide the money in that envelope! Maybe with a little card explaining the family tradition!

I agree with Victoria. I would just have your dj invite your guests (start out with your groom) to cut in if they please. No money involved.

I’ve seen in my search that people can give well wishes on paper instead of money. Like advice or something.

A money dance is more of a cultural thing. So, don’t expect most people here to understand it. Some cultures practice it and it is their traditional way.
