Subtle touches of Star Wars and Harry Potter combined

Catherine, on September 5, 2018 at 11:17 AM Posted in Planning 0 5
I’m getting married on May 4, 2019 (Star Wars day.) We have incorporated some Star Wars elements into our wedding planning already. ( cake topper, wording on std/invitations, hairstyles etc. ) We want to include some HP elements as well however; we don’t want it to look like a child’s birthday party. We want to keep things classy, elegant and simple as possible.

So far we have thought of a bird cage ( for guest to put cards in) and book pages as table numbers

Any others you can think of?

Hi there Catherine!! I love everything that I know about your wedding. Date, Star Wars, Harry Potter, bird cage for cards, I am here for it all.

You could have "floating"/hanging candles, little goblets for drinks instead of wine glasses, a signature drink like Firewhiskey or Love Potion, a quill to sign a guestbook with if you're having one. If you don't already have wedding colors, you could try and incorporate some of the house colors into your color scheme. (For some reason I associate Star Wars with blue, so you might already have some blue and that could be Ravenclaw and you could incorporate some gold in there and it could represent Gryffindor/Hufflepuff/C3PO all in one.)

There are a million different ways you can incorporate HP into your wedding and it still be classy. Definitely try and look through these discussions for more ideas.

    Harry Potter inspiration!

Come back and tell me how you decide to incorporate Harry Potter into your wedding! I'm so excited for you!

    Quidditch match at the reception!

It's been a few years since I've watched but you could do long tables like they do at Hogwarts rather than the standard round ones. Maybe serve some butter beer and some of the food you always saw them eating at the school banquets. Tarts, etc. Mostly British style food, I think.

I'd keep it star wars subtle and save the harry potter for rehearsal dinner or some other event. I love these subtle personal touches but too many of them and it does get to feel really gimmicky and cheesy. Also, lots of your guests are probably not into these things near as much as you and are lost on them or confuse them For example, a friend who loves the movie started her wedding with the famous ceremony lines "Mawiage" from Princess Bride, some people laughed, I thought it was funny. At the end her cousin was asking why they chose an officiant who couldnt say "marriage" correctly and her husband grandma was also super confused.

We are also doing a totally geeky themed wedding! We rented a venue that is a recreation of a Medieval castle hall - looks just like the Great Hall at Hogwarts, we will be doing floating candles and tapestries/flags for decorations particularly off the balcony that over looks the whole room (it is included in the rental but we are planning on keeping it just for us and as storage for equipment + the speakers for our music. We are using a fantasy universe map for our seating chart - it will have some planets and ships on it for the space themed fandoms we are incorporating but most will be a big planet with the medieval and other "earth" based fandoms drawn on (My fiancee is painting it herself - she is an amazing artist!) and each table is going to be named after one of these places. Depending on how many you have you could name your tables after locations or classes or even people in HP. We are also putting a quote on each table about love from the book/movie/video game the world is from. So for example Le Petit Prince is one of my favorite books and will definitely have a table (named after the Prince's home asteroid) and its quote will be "On ne voir bien qu'avec le coeur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." (Or "We can only see well with the heart. That which is essential is invisible to the eye." - translated by me roughly right this moment. But it will be in French on the table because I majored in French Lit and my friends from college will be the ones seated there - and it is a book we performed as a reader's theater so many times together.) We are being subtle in our marking of each table - keeping the centerpieces mostly the same except for the symbol we have chosen to represent each - some are really simple because there is one used in the film/game/book but others were more challenging (but they will be designated on the map and on everyone's escort/favor ornaments). So Le Petit Prince will have a rose with a fox on it - the fox says the quote in the story and it is about the rose. My sister requested the Hundred Acre Wood so that table will have Winnie the Pooh (original artwork not Disney) on theirs. The symbol will replace the table numbers for us.

Other subtle but still very HP ideas could be naming your signature cocktails after potions - bonus points if they look like them - Felix Felicis would be a great one to use! (We are doing butterbeer because we want a hot option being that it will be December and it is easy to make that as a mocktail and let individuals decide if they want it spiked so even the kids can have some). Pottery Barn just added a whole HP line including some really subtle and elegant options for adults - you can look at their catalogue for ideas. You could also get a cake cutting set that has handles that look like wands (and wooden handles are classy anyway), use trees in your decor, use parchment paper for your stationary suites, hide something small in your wardrobe - my dress is covered in a fabric that is reminiscent of Padme from SW and I'm having a tiara made that will hide the major symbols of our favorite fandoms (just the ones that can be done super subtly not things like Winnie the Pooh) in the filigree work. They make some really classy and subtle HP jewelry - like recreations of Hermione's Yule Ball jewelry or Fleur's wedding jewelry.

I'm excited to see what you come up with!

These were such great ideas! I am doing slate blue bridesmaids dresses and will be having sunflowers in my bouquet, as well as some greenery in my std and invites.
