Strolling Reception Feedback

Ranae, on January 30, 2016 at 1:40 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

When I was younger I attended my cousin's wedding and her reception was held in a museum. Rather than a traditional sit down plated/buffet dinner, they had an open bar at one end of the room and several serving stations along the outskirts. Across the room from the bar (think rectangle room) there were designated tables and seating for each guest. The dance floor was centered in the middle with several high top tables and stools surrounding. The space was huge so it definitely wasn't crowded. I would like create this same atmosphere for my reception and include servers walking around with hors d'oeuvres, but my fiancé is against it. Instead he wants to have a buffet, which I find pretty similar to this although with a strolling reception, people can just grab a bite to eat from each station and just mingle and dance all night. I really want to do this because I can then focus on taking time to chat with everyone. Also, the reception wouldn't begin until 8PM or even a bit later.

I'm just curious who would want to attend a wedding reception like I described? Any feedback would be great; pros and cons! Thank you Smiley smile

I've been to a wedding kind of like you described. It was really fun and as it got later the stations changed to ice cream and dessert stations which was awesome. As long as you have enough food for everyone I would think it would be fine.

Stations are pretty much a buffet... I think this sounds just fine as long as there's plenty for everyone. Personally, I would like this. Anyways fun to eat many things instead of just a few!

So a friend of mine did this at her reception. Just a word of caution, she only had 1 meat (prime rib carving) station and the portions were small. I remember the portion could be folded up on my fork and I could eat it in one bite. The line for this station backed up and people were left hungry. Since this doesn't sound like a full on dinner, you might be okay but know that some of your guests might not think otherwise and expect a meal.

I think it is a great idea. I wouldn't have a issue it with it as long as there is enough food.

I think this would work if your ceremony started at 7pm or later followed by your 8pm or later reception start time. If it was earlier, I think your guests may expect more than hors d'oeuvres because it would be right around dinner time.

I think, especially for a later wedding, this is a nice set up! My cousins had a wedding that had more of this set-up with stations instead of a formal sit down dinner but they didn't have enough seats for everyone and that was a pain, and actually caused quite a few guests to leave early. So as long as you have seats for each butt you should be good Smiley smile

I'm doing a cocktail reception. Ceremony at 7 pm. Passed hors d'oeuvres, pasta station, stir fry station, late night pizza and nachos. I put cocktail reception on my invites.

Nice idea, everyone can just graze. Just make sure you have enough food.

I love it. I would also add 'cocktail reception' to the invite, but also have passed hors as well. This format is so, so fun!
