String Trio or Quartet?

Suzanne, on July 13, 2015 at 1:12 AM Posted in Planning 0 6

I'm interested in a having string trio or quartet for the ceremony, but I'm not sure which one to pick. It's a pretty big venue and there will be about 250 guests. Has anyone had a trio or quartet, and what were your thoughts/experiences?

We are having a string trio for our ceremony and cocktail hour. I love how classy and elegant it sounds! We went with a trio instead of a quartet simply because it cost less! I don't think it matters in terms of the size of your venue- our musicians offer the option to use Boise sound equipment to amplify the sound. We won't need that at our venue, but any musicians you contact you may want to ask about sound amplification.

We're having a string quartet simply due to the arrangements we wanted. For us, it was also more cost effective since we found our musicians through a local college (and saved a ton of money!) and they didn't have any trios to recommend.

However, volume shouldn't be a deciding factor -- if you've got that many guests, your venue should have a sound system that can amplify what they're playing.

It depends on what you want them to play. If the arrangement is not that important, then remember you will be paying more for an extra violin.

It really depends on what you want. The other stuff isn't really a factor. I suggest you youtube some of the songs you want with a trio vs quartet and see what you like best. Also ask them for a list of songs they play - if there are songs in there that you want that one does and the other does not do, you should have your answer.

I would get the quartet and request Canon in D if you are going the traditional route.

What everyone else said ... We are having a trio instead of a quartet simply because it is cheaper and we get the same ambiance. Also Chrissy - a trio can play Canon in D. That is my entrance song.
