String lighting vs. Bistro Lighting?

L + R, on July 31, 2014 at 3:17 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

For our reception, we have roughly 30x30ft (900 sqft) of backyard to hang lighting. I wanted to do the zig-zag type that is normally done with bistro lighting (see picture) however bistro is TOTALLY expensive. Would the zig-zag look okay with string lights instead? I can't find any examples, which makes me think it'll look cheap or tacky.

I think it might look ok. But I'm not sure.

Could you find a picture of the type of string lights you're talking about? I think that could make a difference.

    ETA:

Okay I just did a quick search for "string lights with small bulbs" on google. Not sure what your budget is/how many you need but found some "globe lights" on Target that don't seem outrageous. They also have rope lights, but that's a different look.

Just had this debate with the husband! We are throwing a (belated) outdoor reception and decided that the lighting was key and worth the splurge. We did find some good deals here: http://www.save-on-crafts.com/cordkits3.html?utm_source=(direct)&utm_medium=landing-pages&utm_campaign=left-nav-sub-cats (hopefully that link works!) I literally spent days scouring the internet and these were the best prices I could find.

I can imagine the lights facing different directions, like mine always do. Maybe you could test it out in a small area? Like with Xmas lights

We are having someone do our lights, I've always imagined dancing under bistro lights and they are expensive and difficult to care for! So, opted for someone to do it, and it's totally worth the money to not DIY I believe!

I have always loved the way it looks when someone hangs the bistro lights in a criss-cross design so I think your reception would be beautiful if you were able to do it. If you go with that, you should definitely look into purchasing them through "save-on-crafts" like Ashley suggested. I purchased a lot of things for my wedding through them recently and I was completely satisfied with my things. They are very reasonable with their prices, everything was exactly as advertised, and my package arrived quickly. You wouldn't be disappointed.

    I just bought these: http://m.target.com/p/philips-25ct-warm-white-led-smooth-g40-globe-string-christmas-lights/-/A-12285336

They resemble actual bistro lighting without three expense. I bought 6, which will be 144 ft in length. The entire reception area is 900 sq ft. At this point I'm not sure whether I bought enough or not.

Make sure you know how many lights you can string together. Light strings with larger bulbs usually blow a fuse on a string if you have more than 3 strings. It looks beautiful.

I am having a company come out to hang cafe lighting for us since I'm somewhat of a walking disaster.
