Stressing Tattoo Cover-up?

Hello Ladies!

I'm new here, but also less than 6 months away from my wedding and desperate for some advice!

I recently got my wedding gown from David's Bridal, and I love it!

However, I have some pretty big tattoos on both of my upper arms (pretty much 1/2 sleeves) that are very colorful. I was hoping that I would be able to cover them up for my wedding day, but it's starting to feel nearly impossible.

I was wondering what your thoughts were on tattoo cover-up -- has anybody effectively done it using makeup? Does it work? I have received varying opinions from different makeup artists, but the overall consensus is that it CAN be done, but it also can rub off pretty easily. The last thing I want to do is leave giant makeup stains on anyone that hugs me or be stressing over it rubbing off all night.

My other thoughts were having sleeves added to the dress. The seamstress at David's Bridal said it can be done, but I worry it's going to look crappy or that I won't have enough time. My dress won't be in until early May, and the wedding is at the end of June. Has anyone had success adding 1/2 or 3/4 sleeves to a dress? I worry this may be miserable in June as well if it's super hot out.

Lastly, my resort would be a bolero or a jacket -- but again, it's going to be hot in June and I don't want to wind up looking even more ridiculous than I would just donning the tattoos.

If anybody has faced a similar plight and can add some thoughts or opinions, it's so greatly appreciated!

Thank you! Smiley smile

P.S. This is my dress, for reference: http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_lace-and-tulle-wedding-dress-with-beaded-straps-wg3834

Can we see a picture of the ink? Without seeing them, my first thought would be to rock them.
IMO that dress would be better sleeveless, even over the spaghetti straps. I'd get a bolero, that you could decide day of to wear for the ceremony/pics if you feel self conscious about it, but I wouldn't. Are there people coming who don't know you have them? I feel like if they are close enough to be invited, they shouldn't be shocked by something you have had a long time!

Rock the tattoos if you're currently happy with the dress and also you won't be dealing with the stress of having sleeves added.

I had a family wedding this past year and wanted to cover my tattoo as well for the primary reason being that most of my family didn’t know I had one and also mostly because I didn’t want to hear their comments/judgements. It became a pain to try and cover up, it’s sizeable and on my back so not the easiest spot to get to and even with help it still didn’t look great covered. I said screw it, I’m showing it and they can say what they want why should I care. So I say if it’s because of comments or judgements, forget them and rock your tattoos!

My mom wants me to cover mine up (she's very traditional; my tattoo actually is a piece to honor the women in my life symbolized by flowers). You can find makeup, but it may require touch ups, may get on your dress, or may not fully cover and people will still know you have tattoos. They are a part of you so I say show them off!

I’m a professional boudoir photographer so having my makeup artists be able to cover up tats is a requirement. If your HMU has the right dermablend products they can cover it so nobody could tell the difference and have it not come off. It’s definitely doable. Just have a good HMU.

I vote rock 'em. I'm going very traditional, minus the giant spider tattoo on my back! I love my tattoo and I wouldn't want to hide it!

Yes it can be done. I have a cosmetology license and have done hair and makeup for weddings. The best option for optimal coverage is airbrush- you want a paramedical blend product. If you find a makeup artist who focuses on airbrush makeup they should be able to accommodate for you. There are a lot of different machines and lines of product that people use. Personally I’ve most commonly used the products from Dinair and when applied properly there wasn’t a huge issue of transfer- but depending the area, combination with tightness of garment and possible sweating it can depend. I’d say to scout out some local makeup artists and see what they can do for you!

My tattoos are showing and I have pagan symbols and a very conservative MIL Smiley winking just let them show. You’ll be so much more comfortable during the day without the sleeves or worrying about makeup smudging

If you want to cover them up, id wear a wrap or shrug. If you are looking for makeup, there is making for people with a skin condition called vitiligo that is pretty long lasting

Why do you want to cover it up? It is a part of you. I would say a jacket rather than sleeves so you can take it off.

Hey there! I'm leaving my tats alone. My hubby to be is all about being yourself and whoever else doesn't like it.....well they can go, ya know. That's why I love him. If you and your partner are comfortable, I don't think you should stress about covering them up. I'm sure the dress, hair, and makeup will be so on point that tats won't look bad. I say talk to your forever and see what he thinksSmiley smile

I saw davids has a lace bolero, it's 3/4 length sleeve. Maybe try that? It'll conceal them and breathe so you don't get hot. I get it, I've got a decent sized upper back tat that I'm thinking about covering too. Haven't started dress shopping yet but I'm looking at a bunch of dresses with lace/illusion backs to cover it.

Dermablend is an option, but do not order online, go to a store and have them find the right shade for you. Sometimes you have to mix more than one shade to get it right, but it does not transfer, at least it hasn't in my experience. I have a tiny tattoo on my ankle and tested it by applying it and then throwing socks on all day. At the end of the day I turned the sock inside out and didn't see any stains from the makeup. I would imagine it would take quite a while to cover sleeves though, I think PP's are right and you should leave them be.

No to the sleeves. Use a shawl or a pashmina to hide them if you want but they are a part of you that you have a right to be proud of.

If you don't want your tattoos to show at all you need Bairly Sheer Tattoo Cover shade 4. It is absolutely the best I have found. Don't rub off complete cover an ez to apply. Amazon is where iI got mine next to nothing an you don/t need much at all a lil goes a long ass way.
