Stressing Over Flowers

Cathy, on July 22, 2019 at 1:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

So, I am highly allergic to pollen--my eyes water, I sneeze, and sometimes, I can wheeze as well. For this reason, I was planning to get artificial flowers for everyone, bridal party and groomsmen included, and also keep floral decor to a minimum. I brought this up to my FH, and he kind of looked at me, like "fake flowers? For everyone?" In addition to my allergies, two of the BMs have to fly home, so giving them a live bouquet seems like a waste of money to me, especially since they wouldn't be able to bring them home with them.

So now, I don't know what to do anymore. I don't mind a live flower for my FH, or live flowers for the groomsmen/ mothers, but this just seems rather weird to do a mix of fake and real. That said, I am totally stuck on what to do. Suggestions?

Oh, a bit extra--all the florists I have talked to have been trying to convince me to buy a whole package with decorations and everything. That, and I now am torn on the colors of the flowers.

HELP, PLEASE!

Honestly fake ones look just as good sometimes so I don't think going with fake is bad at all and they tend to be cheaper

I initially had the same trouble with the florist my venue manager recommended. I decided it wasnt what I was looking for and found a small local flowershop that would be used to dealing with high school kids for prom where I can pick up the flowers myself the day of. 4 bouquets & 14 boutainneires/corsages. They actually sat down and talked specifics with me and FH. It might be a good idea to stay away from specialized wedding florists because they will expect to do a full package. Single rose boutainneires are a standard around most local shops.

Fake flowers with beads, faux pearls and/or extra ribbons or maybe even brooches might be a good idea so that you dont have to worry as much about your own bouquet clashing with real flowers. (plastic flower quality can really vary.)

In my best friend's wedding, she had us carry wicker wreaths that only had a few flowers on them along the bottom so that might be an option to reduce the amount of real flowers you are dealing with if you want to keep your bridesmaids in sync with the groomsmen. in that small amount, you could also use silk flowers without looking extreme.

I tend to agree with your FH about using the standard plastic florals but found silk to be a really good option. they look better in person than they do in the picture below. These are what I am using as decorations.

Honestly go fake, it's not worth the allergy risk, nobody will know unless you look real close, and they don't risk dying on you.
Plus you can bring them all home as decorations for your house.

I would stick with fake flowers just based on your allergies alone. To help save even further we opted for a flowerless centerpiece.

I'm going with artificial flowers because real are too expensive, and I too, have allergies, and I want my bouquet to last forever! Now it will.

You can always get boutenierres for the men in real flowers. Even going to your local grocery store would be cheaper than a florist. I know my local Safeway does bouts and corsages all the time, and they are really beautiful, at a fraction of the cost from a florist.

Don't let yourself be pressured into a package by a wedding florist. This is what they do, and they'll give you the hard sell. But you already decided what you wanted for your wedding. I think the only reason you're second guessing is because of FHs comments.

But the silk flowers available today are really gorgeous, and don't look fake at all! Check this out:

This is a pic from a fellow bride. These are called Real Touch artificial flowers. Look pretty real to me!

Those are gorgeous! I am looking at the silk ones from the Budget Bride website, and they look nice. I agree, silk looks nicer than plastic. I was thinking of using the fake garlands from Michaels to adorn the banisters.

There's nothing wrong with fake flowers! Maybe check out sola wood flowers - they're gorgeous!

If you're allergic to real flowers, please don't risk it! Fake flowers are beautiful, and honestly, guests care zero about the flowers at weddings, so who cares what the family thinks. You can get really high quality ones either to DIY or ready-made from places like Etsy. Here's my silk flower bouquet from Etsy as an example!

I second sola wood flowers! They’re a unique alternative, can be cheaper than silk, and also last for practically ever!

And you can dye them whatever colors you want! I’ve heard you can also scent them but I don’t do well with fragrance, so I opted not to.

The pic has mine against my mom’s MOB dress (same color as my MOH’s).

We decided flowers were way too expensive and we're not getting any at all. Our groomsmen are escorting our bridesmaids down the aisle so they will have their hands around the gent's arms. But if you really want the girls to hold something, there are a lot of other options out there as well. For the centerpieces on the tables, we're doing candy buffets. I'm really excited about that!

I’m going to use fake flowers. I haven’t ordered all of them yet but I’ve ordered some on amazon to check colors. Ling flowers I believe there called. This is a mock up of how I want to do my centerpieces. Obviously I’ll be adding a lot more flowers and greenery to the top and definitely the bottom part of the circle. But I think the flowers look real enough for me. They are made out of foam which is weird but they look good. Oh and I think I’ll spend like $200 total on my flowers, definitely a plus.

These are fake flowers. They’re foam. I feel like they look very real. Maybe order some samples off a website and see what FH thinks of them. He might be thinking something totally different than what you’re envisioning.

I ordered these flowers as well but I'm worried that they are made out of "latex foam". What if a guest is allergic to latex? Will they be affected?

I didn’t think about that... but your guests won’t be touching the flowers, your wedding party will, so maybe just check with them regarding allergies.
