Stress eating & dress

Meagan , on February 23, 2018 at 9:05 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 19
So I have a dress situation. I’m getting married on July 7th. My dress won’t be in until (hopefully) at the latest June 15, which is pretty much 2 weeks before my wedding. We tried to get a 16, but the company wasn’t making a 16 cut to be in in the time frame we needed. So we went to a 14. Well I obviously HAVE to fit into this dress, which I’ve already lost some weight and I’m finally able to tell a teeeeny bit of difference. I am a stress eater. I’m having to make a lot of decisions, which isn’t my strong suit. I don’t think my FH realizes that weddings are important to most women. To me this day is important to me and with less than 135 days to go and still a lot to do. I’m drowning in a pool of wedding. Haha. Well trying to diet and being overwhelmed is for the birds. I’ve tried to start a diet 3 times since we ordered my dress and then I have a stress eating day and it goes to crap. How do you girls cope with not stress eating and possible help with weight loss tips???

So i DEF stress eat. What helps is finding other ways of stress relief. For me it's monthly massages and making sure I take a break during the day for a run.

If you don't do these things at the very least keep a food journal. You'll eventually notice how often you'll have to write in it if you're stress eating, and how annoying it is. It didn't take me very long to realize when I stress eat I love anything with peanut butter (hello calories). So now I find something else to do, get gum, take the dog for a walk, go for a run. But the food journal helped put into perspective what I was actually eating and make a conscious choice to change. Because when you stress eat (at least for me) I don't even realize what I'm eating until it's too late.

I’m the opposite way... I don’t eat when I’m stressed. But, something that could work for both of us (increase my appetite and quell your stress) is to fit in 20-30 minutes of cardio exercise every day. What do you like to do? Do you have a dog that needs to be walked? A bike you can ride? A treadmill or stationary bike? When I worked in an office, I used to take half of my lunch hour and go for a walk. It really helps. And wow, can you release some stress with a little cardio. Good luck!👍

I have problems stress eating, eating all the time, and honestly I have the appetite of a horse! I could eat all day everyday, to help, I exercise my ass off literally. I run every am and I weight train and do more cardio in the afternoon, I drink water like it's my job and I allow myself one true cheat meal a week. I do focus on my eating as well, but I know myself. I have lost 25lbs since September. You have time and you can do it. I keep trying on my dress (I ordered mine and have had it since October) , once per month to make sure I keep myself in check. Case in point this am I grabbed a bagel, I was starving, but I will go to the gym tonight to try to burn that off. Good luck OP.

Hi Meagan, I just finished a 3 day smoothie/soup cleanse recommended by my gym. It was an easy way to take the guesswork out of it and give my system a reboot. I did loose a few pounds in the three days, but most importantly I am now approaching my meal choices with a fresh approach and feel ready to tackle the next few months! Here is the link if you want to check it out: http://boutiquefitness.com/recipe/3-day-detox-2/?platform=hootsuite

Side note: I am not a doctor or anything, but this was developed by trained Nutritionists Smiley smile

My measurements go with a 14, but at my waist/tummy area (mainly tummy - where my extra weight hits) was where it was really close. So we had planned on a 16, but the company wasn’t doing a cut that would be ready before July 7. We have an inch on each side to use I think is what she said. It’s a ball gown so our main thing is it fitting the top. But when you try on a dress and you fall in love with it after having a dress situation (way long story). It’s hard to give it up and not pick it.

My mom & her friend are the ones that are helping. But my mom works and at the moment her friend is recovering from knee surgery. I’m going to have a talk with my FH about maybe helping with some stuff, but at the moment it’s a lot of bride decisions. Portraits, flowers, bridesmaids dresses (this one was checked off this week), etc.

I don't stress eat, I'm actually opposite. But regardless I have quite an appetite. I used to measure and weigh and track everything I ate several years ago when I was actively losing weight, and I was eating around **** cals per day. Now serving sizes are laughable to me. I mean I can go to a restaurant and usually finish my plate, and everyone knows how big portions are at restaurants.

OP, I know it's going to be difficult but you need to find a different outlet to relieve your stress. Exercise is a great alternative, even if it's just doing some squats or jumping jacks when all you want to do is eat. I also think a food journal would be helpful.

    You can do this!!!

We don't keep snacks in the house because my fiance and I can't control ourselves, if its there... we're eating it...all of it. When we really do want to snack, (normally on the weekends) we eat Halo Top or Breyers low calorie icecream. They're about 300 calories for the whole pint.

Going to the gym helps a lot too. It basically distracts me from eating and makes me more conscious because I know how tough working out is and I think twice about ruining it with snacks. To motivate me to do cardio I either make a really good playlist that I'll look forward to listening too or I also got the CBS app and I watch shows on my phone while exercising. I kinda look forward to cardio because I can watch the next episode of a series or listen to some good music.

As far as stress goes, we use an oil diffuser at night and with scents like lavender and it seems to help a little!

Meagan I completely understand where you’re coming from. I’m a stress eater, stress smoker, and generally a stress self-destructor.

Just be determined. The dress is ordered in a size too small, you don’t have a choice - you are going to wear that dress.

I really believe that just setting your sights on that end goal, having that “ah-ha!” moment will really get you moving.

    Best of luck ❤️

You’ve got to be very careful! I have bought 3 dresses so far because of this! I know I’m a stress eater! So I have 78 days and I just keep saying I’ve already spent so much, I can’t afford another dress!

One "bad" meal or day is ok - just hop right back on the horse and get to it!

    1. Get all your trigger foods out of the house so that way it is really difficult for you to get that bag of chips, trail mix, whatever

    2. Eat high volume meals, add a ton of lettuce, or veggies to your meals to make it seem like more

    3. Still add flavor and texture to your meals and make them enjoyable

The big thing here is to not beat yourself up when you dont eat "perfectly"

Stress eating is a maladaptive coping pattern to deal with stress and it seems like you have a really negative relationship with food and dieting. Eating releases a feel good chemical in your brain which helps you feel better about being stressed. This is obviously becoming a problem since you seem to be upset about possibly not fitting in your gown.

Seeking a psycholgist and nutritionist to help with appropriate coping mechanism and nutritional planning will do wonders. Locking away snacks or relying on sheer willpower will only stress you out more, pushing you to want to stress eat more. Please find some professional guidance. What every before me is suggesting is essentially just a band-aid on a bullet wound.

First of all, forgive yourself for stress-eating days. They're going to happen, but they don't have to derail a whole diet just because you feel guilty about it. Work "cheat" snacks into your meal plans. Go to the grocery store on a full stomach and only buy healthier snacks. If it's not there, you can't eat it. I plan out my weekly menus before I go to the store and only buy the food I need for that week. I understand that not everyone has the time or wherewithall to put together a meal plan for every day every single week, but if you can manage that, it does help.

For planning, make lists. Write out a list of every decision you have to make. When you make one, check it off the lists. It feels more like an accomplishment when you can visualize it. With decisions you're having a hard time with, assign it to your FH. Give him a due date, and ask him to choose. If he pushes back, tell him you're dealing with decision fatigue and you just need him to take a few options away from you to clear your head. He may not care about the choices, but I'm sure he cares very much about you.

When you get really stressed, walk away from planning. You may feel like you don't have the time to do that, but you do. With 135 days to go, you likely have all of the big things in place. Just remind yourself that you're doing fine, even if you don't feel like you are. Good luck with the diet and the planning!

I’ve tried to get all of my trigger food & junkie snacks out of the house, but the fiancé isn’t worried about his weight so much and he eats whatever. The next time we go grocery shopping if he gets junk food it’s going to be hidden from me. I’ve just got to change out my snack foods. And have a back up to the healthier snack foods when I eat through them. I’m going to end up eating a ton of celery and carrots by my wedding.

I’m a stress eater as well. During the busy season at work I eat a lot of crap if I’m not careful. Give yourself something to eat that would help distract you but still taste good. For me, that was being able to eat as much fruit as I wanted. It really helped me not eat as much chips and candy

I’m also a terrible stress eater. Drink water every time you’re hungry before you eat, it’ll fill up some space. If you’re not a big water person, get one of those water bottles with a filter thing in the middle where you can put some fruit in there 😊

Hi ladies! I'm a nutritionist and clinical pharmacist. I have done years of research into diet and nutrition "using food as medicine" and now always recommend low carb/high fat diets to all of my patients looking to lose weight. Any diet which limits carbs can be used really. I usually refer my patients to Atkins or Keto diets for ease of access online. What's important is to remember for these diets to be most effective to include plenty of fat (butter, olive oils, cheese, full fat yogurt - nothing that says low fat, reduced fat, fat free because that just means they put in a bunch of sugar to make it taste okay)...fat keeps you full, energized, and it tastes great obviously and contrary to popular belief does NOT make us gain weight! It's been my life's passion to keep spreading the word of LCHF nutrition since health professionals/institutions are lagging way behind with their archaic low-fat recommendations. Good luck ladies! I know you all will be amazing and beautiful!!!

I stress eat a lot. My life is stressful lol.
We have gotten rid of all the snacks in the house and every time I get kinda hungry (or bored) I drink water.
I cant give you results yet because I just started, but know you aren’t the only one and we can get through this together!
