Streaming platforms

L. Thomson, on September 19, 2020 at 2:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 9
What is the best platform for streaming our wedding? We already planned to stream our wedding for all our out of town friends and family that cant attend. But now, we have a very important reason to stream our wedding. My fml may not make it to our wedding. My fml had a major stroke a week ago. Itgreatly affected her left side and just yesterday was transferred from the hospital to a rehab facility. The doctors said she could be released from rehab as early as 10 days, but that's not a guarantee. Our wedding is scheduled for October 10th of this year. We discussed rescheduling with my fml and ffl, but they both want the wedding to continue even if my fml has to watch via stream. She said she would feel really bad if she was the reason we reschedule. So we really need to have a reliable streaming platform.

If you have a videographer or DJ, check with them. They may offer a livestream option with their services. If you want to do it on your own, I’ve heard that Zoom is pretty good. And I’m sorry to hear about your FMIL’s stroke, but I’m glad she’s recovering and I hope she gets better soon! 😊

We aren't using a videographer or DJ (mostly DIY wedding). We did consider zoom, but I'm not really familiar with it.

I’ve also heard of people using Facebook Live and YouTube, but I don’t know how they work.

I checked into YouTube, and I dont have the subscriber numbers for live streaming. We also considered Facebook, but not sure if everyone has Facebook. However, I think Facebook records it too, which would be nice.

Do you have any tech savvy friends that can help set it up on your end and provide clear directions with the invites? Zoom or a similar service would reach more people than Facebook.

Yes, my fiance's nieces are pretty tech savvy. I was already planning to ask one of them to stream it.

I use Zoom a lot for school and I find it to be very user friendly. You can just schedule the meeting ahead of time and email a link to everyone (with or without a password) and they can just click on the link or join from there. You have to download the app to use it on a smartphone, but you don't have to if you're on a computer, and making a Zoom account is a lot simpler/less invasive than making a Facebook account, so people would probably be more willing to do that.
You are limited to 40 minutes for a group meeting with the free account, but you could choose to pay ($15) for an account and just cancel it after a month if you don't need it. You can record the meeting on your device if you want to.
Whichever platform you use, you'll want to make sure your internet connection is strong before you start. So check the Wi-Fi at your venue before you start, and if it's not great, stream it from the smartphone of the family/bridal party member who gets the best reception. Also, make sure the device you're using is at 100% battery before you start.

We're planning on using Zoom for our family and friends that won't be in attendance physically.
