Strapless vs Off-shoulder

Caitlin, on March 9, 2022 at 11:43 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

I was looking at bridesmaids dresses (I am having them all wear the same things but keeping their input in mind on what they want and having them vote out of my top 3) and I was told by I think all but 1 of them no strapless. Cool, I can do that. I hate wearing strapless too because I spend the whole night pulling my dress up! So I don't get married for another 14 months but I'm bored and am looking right now. I like a lot of off shoulder dresses. I am worried that maybe too close to strapless but I personally do not know. Those of you who have worn off shoulder can you tell me if it is like strapless or if it isn't if it is hard to move in? Lowkey, I have the girls dresses as Cinderella blue and thought it'd be funny if it was off shoulder to kind of look like the Cinderella dress so I think that's where my fascination is coming from right now (all my bridesmaids are big Disney fans so they'd love that lol). But I wanted input. Again, the girls aren't going to be ordering the dresses till like November or December at the earliest but I am wanting to narrow my search and narrow down my saved list haha.

I think your best bet is to just ask them what they think. I've never worn an off the shoulder dress, but I feel like off the shoulder presents the same issues as strapless: no support and needing to wear a strapless bra so still tugging it up all the time.

I worked in bridal for 3.5 years, and unless there’s a second strap going over the shoulder, off the shoulder is structurally the same as strapless. The straps don’t hold anything up, they’re purely decorative. The other option would be having the straps tight on the arm, which would prevent the dress from slipping some… but the bridesmaids would be able to raise their arms and it wouldn’t be very comfortable. If they’ve requested no strapless I wouldn’t do off the shoulder. What about a cap sleeve? That might even look more like the Cinderella dress.

Off the shoulder is similar to strapless with no support to stay up. Unless the dress has lots of boning to keep it place, you may need to try a different style. Take a look at Azazie.com and let them pick what they are comfortable in that they can try on at home. Do all the dresses have to match?

Off the shoulders will not be that restricting but they all should be measured because everyone has a body type shapes are different. I'm my party there are some who are very busty and others who are not and in the middle. Then the consultant can help put them in the right 1

I would just ask them. I agree with Hannah that off the shoulder presents the same issue as strapless, in that you can't wear a normal bra underneath the dress.

Echoing everyone that off-the-shoulder would result in the same struggle as a strapless dress. I like Lydia's idea of finding something with a cap sleeve. The original cartoon Cinderella had like poofy cap sleeves, and the reimaged one seems to have tulle cap sleeves. If you really like the off-the-shoulder option after looking around, maybe give your bridesmaids a few other options and see what they say.

Unfortunately, yes they all have to match. I have just loved that look since I was a kid and still do. I am giving them voting options so that they are just not wearing whatever, they are feeling confident in what they have or whatever. But yeah that is a goal for me is for them to match.
