Stranger Danger engagement ring gawker

MrsBest2B, on March 1, 2015 at 11:01 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

I had my first stranger gawk at my ring today and it was both weird and sweet at the same time. I was sitting at the bar with FH and as I used my left hand to set down my wine glass, the stranger lady next to me grabbed my hand and acknowledged my engagement. First she asked us why we're waiting so long and then she proceeded to tell me what type of wedding bands I should and shouldn't get to go with my "simple ring" (1/2 carat solitaire). In a way it was very sweet and I think she only meant well by it, but also it was a little weird---kind of like when strangers randomly touch a pregnant belly (I'm assuming). Anyone else have strangers grab you and begin giving you wedding advice?

Yeah, I don't like being touched. Looks like the bling caught her eye. Maybe you can wear gloves.... J/k. I hate unsolicited advise too. Sorry about the intruder!

Yea I have a lot of weird and completely rude comments made about my ring. It's a 1.5ct pear shaped diamond with a single cut baguette on each side. One person I didn't know grabbed my hand and insisted it wasn't real. I yanked my hand back and I said, "Ma'am I can assure you it is 100% real and not only is it incredibly rude to suggest that a strangers engagement ring is a fake, but it's also incredibly rude to grab a strangers hand when it is unwanted." Then I walked away. I'm always getting comments like that. Or.... "How did he afford that?" Well... It's none of your fucking business is it?

I always have strangers grab my hand to look at my ring. I don't like people touching me, but I'm so in love with my ring, now rings, that it just makes me proud. They never offered advice, though, they'd just tell me "oh he did GOOD!". I guess if they tried to give me advice it would have rubbed me the wrong way, but all you can do is smile and thank them.

I know early on in the engagement we were checking out at the supermarket. We had been doing something lovey (holding hands, or sharing a quick kiss, or something else that obviously signified we were a couple). The cashier asked if we were getting married, but in a sort of judgmeental way. We said yes, and then she proceeded to tell us we were too young to be getting married, and not in the cute joking kind of way but in a serious "youre making the worst decision of your life" kind of way. :/ i was 24, and fh was 30 at the time so its not like we were two teenagers that she needed to give the motherly judgmental advice too.

I hate when people offer unsolicited advice or invade my personal space. A couple months ago I was at Starbucks with one of my BM who is also engaged. We were sitting at a table just chatting about our plans. Someone sitting near by inserted herself in our conversation and started giving us tons of advice. She just kept talking and didn't even give us time to respond. We finally just left.

I only get open comments from my family and friends. One of my SIL said, "Damn, my brother MUST really love you!"

I find it sooo rude when people do this. I get the "Why so young???" comment all the time because we're 23/24 and very baby-faced. Now when someone's rude about our age we tell them it's just our 1st marriage(Inside joke between H and I, as the wedding we had was symbolic). They tend to get mortified and walk away reaaally quickly.

I get lots of comments on mine, but I haven't had anyone grab at me. That would piss me off. It's never appropriate to touch a stranger!

I have had compliments on it or people telling commenting how 'different' it is for an engagement ring. My grandmother actually kissed it this weekend (she came in from Greece on Friday and I haven't seen her in almost 2 years).

It happens to me all the time because I have an emerald..strangers constantly grab my hand, or comment on it. I would say at least once a week if not more.

Shortly after we got engaged I had the weirdest experience with a stranger in the grocery. I was checking out and the cashier grabbed my hand when I was giving her the money and asked me if she could try on my ring! Then goes on to ask if it is fake because "it shined so much" then says "how do I get me a man to buy a ring like that?"

Well accosting strangers in the store isn't the way for sure Smiley winking

Not a ring (we're not engaged yet) but we see about 30 or so people once a month from my unit during drill. do you know what every single person asks? 'are you married yet'

No. we're not. I promise, you will KNOW when I am engaged because there will be a shiny on my finger. Do you see a shiny on my finger? no? Then STOP ASKING ME EVERY TIME.

Fortunately i havent had this happen yet, i wear rings (or two) on each one of my fingers so most people overlook the fact that its an engagement ring. i have more of a problem with people randomly touching my lip hook or poking at my tattoos which is means for a beat down. god forbid anyone touches my engagement ring, the outcome will not be pretty

It was my first experience with this and honestly haven't had many. My ring is fairly small (I like to say modest) in comparison to most women in my area (NJ) who live on large diamonds and bling so I can't say I get the gawkers a lot. It felt good that she took notice, but thought it was weird when she was telling me what types of rings to get or not get. Like, Ok lady I'll remember your opinions when we're shopping for bands lol.

Uber Dami, my best friend and MOH has almost a full back tattoo that peeks out over the top of lower collared shirts. I've literally seen men, strangers, pull back her shirt and look down her back without asking to see her tattoo! Like, oh ok I have a tattoo so feel free to look down my shirt at any time!! People are so bizarre

@B2Z we are 21 and 22 we get those comments also.I have had people I work with and don't talk to check out my rings like they were a jewler, I thought it was so rude. We went to Davids Bridal for shoes and the lady lectured us. I do look young but really that is still rude.
