Sticky Zipper

Jennifer, on January 8, 2022 at 11:09 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
So, I almost had a freak out and thought I had gotten a lot bigger that my dress won’t zip anymore. But, even when I’m not in it, the dress is sticky at this point where the left zipper party curls. Do I need to have them fix this before my official fitting months from now or should I just wait until then?

Pic of the sticky spot with me in the dress. I’m just happy it’s not me lol. I have a separate post asking if I should just change the back to a ribbon tie or even a button up. Would that be safer than dealing with this potentially “sticky” situation on the day of the wedding? I had to bring the back of the dress to the front and zip up, open slightly and twist my dress back to the right position just so I could zip it today. Unzipping it had the same problem at the same spot and had to ask my fiancé to do it for me.Sticky Zipper 2

I would talk to your seamstress when you go to your fitting appointment, and not worry about it in the meanwhile. As far as day-of - is someone getting ready with you? My MOH zipped my dress (made for an interesting set of photos lol), so if someone will be there who can zip you in, you should be good to go. Your FH can unzip you - even if you're changing before you leave your venue.

Thanks! I’ll make sure to mention it and inspect the zipper on the second fitting. The last thing I want on the day of is a wardrobe malfunction. So the dress fits perfectly (right now), I’m just scared that they’ll somehow make it bigger because the zipper is malfunctioning.

If the zipper sticks, rub the metal teeth with the end of a graphite pencil, chapstick or white crayon wax. Zip and unzip the zipper to help work the 'lubricant' in to the teeth. Just be careful none of the above get on your dress.

Yes, that too! I didn't mention that because if not done carefully the excess gel may stain the dress. If you want to use it .... first cover that part of your gown with a washcloth (pin it to stay in place) Pinch the zipper teeth between your fingers to make them protrude upwards and apply the gel with a q-tip. Do it on both sides. Sticky Zipper 3

Definitely don't want a wardrobe malfunction! I'm sure that your seamstress (or Pat's advice) will work wonders. You're going to look beautiful on your day Smiley smile

Thank you for the photo tip! I’ll do that. If you see the pic below, it just kinda looks like the zipper on the left side isn’t straight and I’m wondering if that’s what’s causing it to be stuck. Not sure if it can be salvaged with lubricant or should just get it replaced all together. I received it like this.

This is the zipper twisting and separating from the dress a little. I use to work in bridal and saw this a lot with people trying to zip themselves into dresses. The key is to not ever try to zip your dress yourself. Or not to force the dress at the waistline to zip. This causes the dress to separate at the tightest point. They will most likely replace the zipper. It also helps if you push your dress back with your hands at the waist when someone is zipping you in so it pushes the fabric backwards and it’s easier and you are not forcing it to zip. I hope this helps!

Do you think they’ll charge extra for replacing the zipper? If so, should I just get this changed to a ribbon tie back or button up? I really don’t want a zipper wardrobe malfunction

If they do charge you it shouldn’t be more than 20-30ish. Changing to a ribbon tie would be a lot more expensive and might change the integrity of the dress because it was built for a zipper. I don’t think you will have a malfunction Smiley smile just make sure your final fitting is a few weeks before the wedding so you know it fits you perfectly! And as hard as it is, don’t try it on again until the wedding day so the zipper can’t twist.

That makes sense though. I’ve gained two inches around my waist since I bought this dress around July. I also have my Dexcom G6 sensor on my abdomen which also adds circumference. Losing the weight is easy but I definitely need to remember to NOT wear my sensor on my abdomen.
