Sterling silver wedding bands?

Finally mrs.jkr, on June 10, 2014 at 8:53 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

I have to search for my band super early.... my ring is oddly shaped and really hard to find a band to go with it, unless completely custom-which I do not want to do. I'll end up doing something nice a mismatched, but a lot of the designs I like are out of are too expensive for our low budget with gold.

Would it be terrible to do sterling silver?

I don't think it's terrible. No one will notice or even care. That reminds me, I need to get the ball rolling on our rings too. Mine is oddly shaped as well but I think I'm going the custom route. I didn't think it through when I chose my engagement ring.

My concern with sterling silver bands is the discoloration overtime may be faster, and my band will be what I wear the majority of the time. I'm not a jewelry pro by any means however.

Why not a tungsten ring, they come in white, black; two tones. I love how the black & white metal pops.

If you get good sterling silver it won't change too bad. My current ring is ss, hot it for x mas and still amazing and I get my hands dirty. Also it's easy to clean ss, a jeweler friend said the beater cleaner for it is 409

I'm know it can have some problems with discoloration.... but I'm also thinking that later I can get a gold band. We are both in college, and FH has his 1 year accelerated master to finish after our wedding, and then he will be able to start in his career and be able to afford a little more expensive of a ring for life... maybe after our 5 year anniversary to make it extra special.

Sterling silver should not be worn all the time. Anyone who says that good silver won't change color is wrong. Good silver does not have alloys in it to keep it from changing colors. It is not as strong as platinum or gold and is actually quite soft.

I've actually had customers come in after wearig silver bands constantly for years and have them be totally cracked in the center and mis shaped.

For me personally, I wouldn't be willing to deal with this as I want a ring that will last a lifetime and never hve to get a new one.

I posted y comment before I saw you're going to upgrade in a few years. If you're just wearing it temporarily I think it will be an issue. Just don't wear it places like swimming, the shower, the gym, etc.

Sterling silver isn't terrible, but it's not very smart for a wedding band. It definitely does change color over time & it's very malleable so it is much easier to bend all out of shape. I wore silver rings for years until I graduated college, and when I took the rings off so that I'd only have on my high school and college rings (I've since replaced the high school ring with my engagement ring), they were all oval or odd shaped and no longer round.

I don't think you should get what is essentially a temporary band for your wedding vows. Look at tungsten (although I don't think a plain white gold band would cost too much, really).

One thing that was pointed out to me by my jeweller was that if your engagement ring and wedding band are made from different metals, the harder one will wear away at the softer one - just something to think about. If you get a tungsten wedding bad it might wear away at your engagement ring. If you get a silver wedding band the engagement ring might wear it away, but if you're looking to replace the wedding band anyway that's probably better than the engagement ring getting damaged.
