Sterling silver vs gold ring

kelsey , on July 4, 2018 at 2:17 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

So I've been on the hunt for a wedding ring and I'm running into the issue that the styles i really like are way out of the price range, unless they are sterling silver.

Is there a huge difference between them ? I obviously would rather just deal with spending a little more on something better quality, especially since ill be wearing it everyday, I'm just having a hard time justifying spending $1000 on a ring when our whole wedding cost $3500 (we are in our early 20s and are more interested in saving for a house and land in this market than an expensive wedding)

Silver isn't as durable as a gold alloy. I'd look for a 10 karat ring, durable and less expensive.

I would go with Gold as with what Mim said it will last and age better. If you like the silver color you could always go with White Gold as well. If you look on Etsy they have a lot of unique rings that aren't all expensive.

Definitely go with gold. If you wear silver every day, it will tarnish very quickly and you’ll end up having to buy another one, or pay to have it cleaned and repaired constantly.

Theres a reason that gold is so expensive. You get what you pay for. It’s definitely worth it in the long run!

I know that it is not related to your post but I would love to know how you spent so little in your wedding I am recently engaged and I am in my early 20's also. The thing I'm struggling with is finding a venue and not spending 10000. Any advise would be great!

H and i went with silver rings and we love them. we actually made our rings, and H wanted a fairly thick band, so price-wise it made the most sense, but i've always liked silver anyway. my ring has a polished finish and i do find i have to polish it every couple of months to keep it shiny, unlike my white gold engagement band which maintains its shine better, but that doesn't really bother me. i've had pieces of sterling silver jewelry that have been handed down to me and have stood the test of time--definitely had no concerns that my ring wouldn't last. silver is actually a denser metal than gold, according to our jewelry designer (and ye olde internet), so it is technically "stronger" though it may not have the same lustrous finish. also, white gold is really nice but is also an alloy, so it does eventually lose some of its silver/platinum colour anyway as the alloyed metals age--the point being that there's maintenance involved with pretty much any metal.

We had that issue as well for venues. they all wanted 8000+ and it was just not in our budget. So we rented this beautiful rock pavilion in a public park for the afternoon. and then the reception is being held in my parents back yard (obviously this isn't an option for everyone) they have a large water front lot. We also talked about renting an AIRBNB for a couple days and having it held there (just make sure they are okay with a wedding happening there)

as for the everything else, its really laid back, we don't care too much about little things, so are doing minimal decorations/mostly DIY's and I'm looking out for deals all the time (literally refusing to buy anything regular price)

we are also having pizza for our dinner. and then just sides like pasta salad and a desert table with cakes from the local grocery store. and then as for paying for stuff, I've set up a savings account so 50$ off every pay check will be put aside. leaving me with enough to pay for the officiant, portapotty, food, and flowers the month of.

please please please feel free to ask me about any specifics !!

The biggest issue with silver even sterling silver is that it can eventually tarnish. If you can manage a gold ring even 10K I would suggest it. White gold does need redipping occasionally, but the day to day maintenance is less than silver.

My wedding band was $150 after tax from Belk and it's 14k gold. It all depends on where you're looking.

I have white gold for the engagement ring and I'm just keeping the ring as the wedding band as well. I had a wedding band my first marriage and I just didn't care for the extra ring (and the extra price). My fiancee has a titanium band that I got for less than $50 and they are very low maintenance.

If you absolutely want a band I'd go with a cheaper white gold.

My rings are sterling silver, and I’ve been wearing them for almost 2 years. I’ve never had a problem with them tarnishing, but I get them cleaned pretty regularly.

Gold is better quality. Look into maybe just a band. My fiance designed mines at james allen and its beautiful. They have options ranging from a couple hundred dollars.

I got tired of the things I liked being crazy expensive so I got a gold plated wedding ring with cubic zirconium diamonds...my engagement ring in the middle is all real and tbh I can’t tell the difference! I figure down the road when we are more stable I can save up for a nicer one but in the mean time this was $50 on Amazon 😂 just make sure you wear it before your wedding day to make sure you don’t react to it...I tend to be allergic to things and I’ve been fine

My weddind band is sterling silver, which is my go to material. Ive been wearing a sterling silver bracelet nonstop for 8 years now, and Ive had to clean it 0 times. I also have a Batman ring thats been sitting on my finger for 3 years with no cleaning as well. Sounds like a no brainer to me!

My engagement ring is sterling silver bc tbh I told him I'd rather spend the money on my dress and making the big day everything I've dreamed of. Were wanting to get white gold for the wedding bands but the sterling has so far held up really well for me. I wear it everyday even at work and I work outdoors with horses in all weather conditions. Yes I have to polish it but in my field I would expect that from anything. To polish I use norwex UPP powder dissolved in water and let it soak for about 5 minutes and then scrub with a toothbrush and rinse. It really works and a bag of UPP costs like 30 bucks and will last you forever.

So my engagement is gold but I have other rings that are all Sterling silver and I've never had any problems. My birthstone emerald ring is sterling silver and I've had it for 6 years and when I get it cleaned it looks brand new everytime just like a gold ring does. If it's solid sterling silver It doesn't tarnish after a while like some have said. This is my sterling silver band 6yrs old vs my white gold band 6months old. The thicker band is sterling silver
