Steaming dress- yes or no

Katy, on July 24, 2022 at 8:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9
Silly question, do I have to steam my wedding dress? It’s lace and has beads and I guess I just don’t understand the reason behind it. It already looks perfect to me. If it was satin or had no lace or beads it would make sense so there were no wrinkles. Thoughts and suggestions?

I think steaming is to get the wrinkles out because there are wrinkles that will be very visible in photos but to the naked eye we can’t see them.

I'd run it by whoever is doing your alterations as they may have tips or suggestions to make sure everything goes according to plan. In general, it's a good idea to steam it just to ensure everything looks right. There may also be wrinkles in the layers beneath the lace and beading that could impact how your dress looks once you put it on, so you'd want to steam it layer by layer, from the inside layer out, and on the inner side of the fabric. Steaming the night before may also help.

Your seamstress doing your alterations should take care of this for you. But you will definitely want to make sure any wrinkle is out of your dress so they aren’t seen in photos!

Definitely ask your seamstress about whether or not it should be steamed. They can tell you based on the materials you’ve listed. Good rule of thumb is to keep it hanging and have as much off the floor as realistically possible to help prevent creasing and wrinkles.

I had this dilemma before my wedding. In the end - are you happy with the way it looks? Not worth taking risks if it's looking good Smiley smile

I ended up not steaming mine.

One trick is apparently to hang it up in the bathroom when you're having a shower. Some salons recommend it.

If the dress has wrinkles you notice and want removed, find the best option to do that. Some of the suggestions are already given. If concerned for the pictures, then check with the photographer for recommendations. The post-processing of pictures could be used to remove or soften wrinkles that appear in the original images.

Absolutely steam it. You don’t want to take any chances with those photos beautiful.

I saw some warning tags against steaming the specific dresses. These had lots of beading which perhaps were vulnerable to heat. I think also these would not have wrinkles which would stand out. Maybe there are some sort of options for these other than steaming -- if it really seemed necessary.
