Steam your dress yourself?

Shannon, on March 15, 2016 at 9:55 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

Has anyone had success steaming your wedding dress yourself?

I've read about hanging it in the bathroom and running a hot shower, and also *carefully* using a handheld steamer. If anyone has done that with or without success, I'd love to hear about it.

Btw...My dress is a lace sheath, so it's not complicated (no multiple layers or beading or sequins) which I why I'm considering this option.

I have never steamed anything, ever. And I would not take my chances with my wedding dress being the first time.

I know that some bridal salons/seamstresses offer steaming as part of their alterations package...Have you looked into whether that is an option?

I always use a steamer, but was WAY too scared to do my dress or veil!

I steam all my clothes with a handheld steamer I purchased from Walmart.

I'm not steaming my wedding dress.

I've never steamed a wedding dress, but I have steamed ball gowns/evening gowns before and it's not really a big deal. You have to know how to use a hand-held steamer properly. If you've never done it before, your wedding dress isn't the place the start. Have it professionally done.

That said, I may end up steaming my own because our wedding is a DW and the dress will have to ride in the car. Depending on how wrinkled it gets, I may take a steamer to it when we arrive.

It's not very wrinkled now, but I'll also be traveling with it so I want to know that I can at least touch it up once I get there. I won't have time to take it somewhere.

We steamed mine at home - technically, at the house where my BMs were staying, lol. We used a handheld steamer. But we only steamed the trail, and my dress was satin. I don't think we would have been so brave with a lace one.

Mine says right on the tag to not steam....I'm really curious as to how my bridal shop will make it look like new again after hanging in the closet for over a year :/

I'll probably steam my own dress if it needs to be touched up. I worked at a bridal salon and used to steam them all the time. I also steam my own delicate fabric garments often so it's not a big deal for me. If you do it yourself remember to use distilled water and to run the steamer on the inside of the fabric layers.

Lol even the ones that say don't steam they steam, they just don't press it. I used to stream so many dresses for work. The biggest thing is to turn it inside out, don't touch the fabric and put a cloth over it. Most the time we used an iron and hand held steamer.

I used to work at a bridal salon and we used a handheld steamer for smaller wrinkles, and it worked out just fine. You'll just need to be really careful. If the dress is really wrinkled, I would take it to a seamstress or wherever you are getting your alterations done if you got any. Maybe do a test run on another dress/outfit to get a feel for it.
