Steam pressing organza wedding dress questions

Rhonda, on October 8, 2015 at 5:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

I was satisfied with the minimal alterations and seamstress I used (all I needed was a bustle), but she said she didn't feel comfortable ironing the dress like I requested because of the nature of the material being organza she said it needed to be steam pressed and recommended taking it to the dry cleaner next door to her business which I did. He is charging me $95.00. Does anybody know if this price is about right to have an organza gown steam pressed?

My seamstress is charging $40 to steam mine. I have a feeling it all depends on where you are located.

I don't think $95 is unreasonable. A dry cleaner charged me $60 to steam the wrinkles out of an antique satin wedding gown 3-4 years ago.

It sounds like a good price.

You never iron a wedding dress unless there's one particular spot on a satin dress that's got a bad wrinkle. Try a dry cleaners that specializes in wedding gowns or something or you can steam it yourself

It totally depends on the fabric. Check with the bridal shop where you purchased as well, as they might offer pressing/steaming. If it is silk organza, special care should be taken because excess water/moisture could leave spots. If it is synthetic organza, steaming is fine, and pressing may even be okay with the proper equipment & experience.

I worked in alterations at a David's Bridal for 5 years, and we pressed every gown. The ONLY fabric that I recall having pressing issues with was taffeta (regular taffeta, not tissue taffeta, which is a popular alternative now), and even that could be pressed, just without any steam. We did press organza and it pressed beautifully. But the irons that we used had teflon-coated plates on them that protect fabrics from scorching.

One of my BM's dresses had an organza thing in the back/shoulders (don't know how else to describe it, lol). We used a steamer (got it at Walmart) and set it in low. It worked, though it did take a bit of time.
