State Park Ceremony - Invalid marriage without permit?

Amee, on June 28, 2020 at 10:01 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 5

My fiance and I just had to postpone our wedding but we are still planning to get legally married this summer. We would like to get married in a State Park in NJ but don't have time to apply for a special events permit. We are not sure we even need one. We were just planning to walk into a part of the park and have a quick ceremony with our officiant. No chairs, no decor, no nothing.

If we don't have a permit and the officiant records the location as the State Park with no permit, will this invalidate our marriage? We might just end up doing city hall in our hometown, but if we can make the park thing happen without any hiccups we'd prefer that!

Thanks for any input!

I would def ask your officiant but i don't think so. i live near dc and have seen people doing pop up wedding on the National Mall and in front of monuments where i know that they don't allow weddings.

I'm in NJ as well, and, it was a year ago so I don't remember 100%, but I think they only asked us the township we were getting married in for the license and then the officiant filed license with that township after the wedding. I don't believe we got asked our actual venue at all.

I'm in MA, but assuming the laws are similar in NJ, the worst thing that could happen is probably that you could be kicked out of the park, but that's not likely to happen anyway. As long as you have a marriage license, you should be good!

The special events permit is more for park regulations and usually things with insurance and stuff like that. I can’t see it affecting the validity of your license. I also can’t really see them asking you to leave if it’s as you say, just an intimate gathering for a brief moment. My NC state and town parks don’t require permits for small gatherings.
