Starting dress alterations too early??

Kaitlin, on August 5, 2019 at 3:47 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20
I made a post about two weeks ago about having extreme anxiety over my dress due to having to buy it as and later finding loose seams/beading and it being four times my size. So in an effort to calm my anxiety I contacted the seamstress that works through where I purchased my dress and scheduled an appointment for next Saturday to start planning alterations on my dress. The store owner just called me and assured me that this seamstress is amazing but also said I could wait till February to start alterations if I wanted for my June wedding. I personally think waiting four months before my wedding to start alterations on my dress that is four times my size and needs some corrections on certain beading and seams from being tried on from other brides is insane but maybe it's just me. Am I crazy for wanting to start alterations 10 months from my wedding?

I don't think it hurts to start alterations early! Also, your dress is beautiful

I think they are suggesting to wait in case your body continues to change in the next few months. One thing that would be good to clarify is if the initial quote for alterations will cover any additional changes that are needed closer to the wedding date (e.g. if you lost a lot of weight after the first fitting), or if they would be billed separately. My alterations invoice covered all changes up to the final fitting, and the last three fittings were each a week apart right before the wedding.

My wedding is in November and I did my alterations in March, so mine were done 8 months before the wedding. I didn't do a lot to my dress and they took a month to complete it.

I did my alterations over a year out, no regrets. I’m gonna take it in one more time just to check it and get it steamed.

I've personally never had trouble with weight change. I've been petite all my life and never weighed over 110 pounds so I don't think that will be a big issue for me. I'm just worried waiting till February will be pushing it since that will start prom season I just want to make sure my wedding dress will have plenty of time to get prioritized and be the way I want it. I had not thought about making sure the price won't change closer to the wedding if extra alterations are needed so that is something I will have to discuss next week!

I think if you aren't worried about your body changing at all and starting the alterations now will give you peace of mind then go for it. I'm sure the store manager is just worried that your measurements could change since there's still a good amount of time until you need it.

That makes me feel so much better that I'm not getting ahead of myself! I'd rather give myself plenty of time than not enough. Just with the holidays and prom season being in between my wedding I want to give the seamstress plenty of time to fix my dress and still have enough time to get it cleaned and steamed so I'm not stressing last minute over things I could have had done a long time ago.

Your dress is beautiful first off! Second, I don’t think it’s too early as long as you don’t anticipate your size changing very much. I started mine about 5-6 months before, but I’m happy that I did because they kept sewing the belt on crooked 🙄 I’ll have it back by the end of this month, still two months before my wedding so I’m not too worried. Everything else has gone smoothly.

I would start now. My dress was also 4 sizes too big and therefore required me going back more than I expected just for the sizing! Each appt is 3 weeks apart.. and my seamstress will not do the "details" until the size is to my liking. I had a fitting Saturday and we are still a size too big in the hips/sides and two sizes too big in the bust. It takes time! And if doing it early means reduced anxiety for you.. then do it!

Thank you! It's not what I thought I would want but I fell in love with the back detail of the dress! And I'm not worried about my size changing extremely I've never had trouble with it in the past and don't anticipate any lifestyle changes that would change my body. I'm also having a belt sewn on the front just not the one that's pictured so I want plenty of time to tell her how I want everything fixed. I would honestly love to have it back two-three months before my wedding so I can get it cleaned and steamed and not have to worry about it until my wedding!

I would start now if your weight doesn’t fluctuate. Don’t let them push you out if you want it done now. Just tell them that. Good luck!

Glad to know I'm not alone here! It sounds like my seamstress will be the same way about the details in my dress so I'd love to start now. My dress needs hemmed as well and with it being all lace I'm sure that'll take some time too. Thankfully my dress is in my hometown so the drive isn't terrible if I will have multiple fittings. I think it'll definitely ease my anxiety because I'm just afraid waiting till February the seamstress will get busy with prom season and my dress will get put on the back burner. I'd rather have plenty of time than not enough!

I don’t think your crazy but seamstress know what there doing! My dress needed soooo much done to it as I bought my dress off the rack and it was very damaged and I changed a lot of things about it! It literally took her 1 week!!! I wouldn’t worry too much about doing it early as your body can change a lot in that amount of time!

Too early. Because if you gain or lose weight closer to the wedding and alter it now its harder to do. My dress was ready for alterations in january 2019 but im getting married in september 2019 and they said come 3-4 months before. I went in july for my first fitting and they have to take in. The second is august 20th

They recommend alterations 8-10 weeks before your wedding so you’re very early. They’re probably just trying to save you money because if you have it altered now, it might not fit closer to your wedding. What if your weight changes or you change your mind on shoes? I think a little early is fine since you need more drastic alterations but ten months is far too long.

Thank you! I appreciate the support. Yes I've never had a problem with my weight extremely changing and I've just been so anxious that I've made myself sick some nights over this dress that I feel I need to at least start a little of the alterations to know it'll all be okay in the end.
