Started dying my sola flowers

NatHam, on March 13, 2017 at 11:31 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 20

On mobile so can't find my previous post. I asked last week about sola flowers I got mine in the mail and couldn't wait to try dying. I think they turned out okay. But the purple is a little light. I need a deeper purple. Hope I can figure that out. Any pointers for a deeper color? I also did some a cream color.

This advice is coming from other types of craft experiences as I have never dyed sola flower before, so take it with a grain of salt lol. But, can you re-dip them once they have dried for a more intense color? eta: words

I would try really dipping them.....also check Google sometimes you will have to add other colors to the dye for the perfect color.

They look good. But I believe a few more dips will make it.

I would re dip them with a darker purple or the purple you have mixed with less water!

Thanks ladies. I have another purple I added at the end and I think that may do it. So I will try redipping with a darker purple. They aren't too off but I don't want them to clash.

I used these for my bouquets as well. Instead of dipping them I bought floral spray paint. You can do 1-3 coats depending on the darkness you want. And it also dries really fast so no waiting in between coats.

Just an idea on the RIT dye Web page you can ask questions or request certain color recipes. I will be dyeing sola too as soon as they arrive!

@SoontobeMrs those look great! Love the color combo Smiley smile

@annuhlee I got my sola flowers on etsy. From the seller TheBackyardGardner. She has the plain ivory color which you can dye otherwise she has a variety of colors. Most of them come stemless so you'll have to add those fyi.

I never thought of floral paint or RIT dye, I should try that!

@annuhlee I bought a good chunk from saveoncrafts and then some from solawoodflowers.com

@SoonToBeMrs.S - Your bouquets are BEAUTIFUL! Where did you buy your flowers? I would love any information you can provide! Considering the sola route since they will last forever but still not sure of all the details.

@cmarie. I got them all on saceoncrafts.com. I also bought the stems on there as well and then got glued them for extra reinforcement. I bought green caspia as filler and also some other dried flowers I didn't end up using them. I would arrange 3 flowers at a time and then tape as you go. I also purchased lace to wrap the stems in.

I used design masters color spray to color them. You can buy it at Wal-Mart but mine didn't carry the colors I wanted so I found a website online.

@SoonToBeMrsS, I realize this post is almost 2 years old but hoped you might be able to share some advice for your method of dyeing the sola wood flowers!

I tried the acrylic dye route but found that my deep color (burgundy) isn't quite what I wanted so I am going to try Master Color Floral Spray. Have your flowers faded at all? Does moisture like rain make the color run? Were you able to use the spray indoors?

    Thank you!!
