Standing on the opposite side of alter

Mary, on October 22, 2021 at 9:49 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 17

Okay. I know it's "tRaDiTiOnAl" for the bride to stand on the left and groom stand on the right at the alter. But I part my hair to the right and in order to have the hairstyle I want and to be able to see my face during the ceremony, I need to stand on the right.

Anyone else do that?

I stood on the “wrong” side and was (very lovingly) told I was messing everything up, but it was just a joke. No one cared and I felt more comfortable. I say do it!

I stood on the “wrong” side without realizing there was a difference. Same reason, my better side lol. I don’t think anyone will notice.

It really doesn't matter. This actually changes in various cultures and religions. The origination of the bride standing on the left was so the groom's right hand was free to draw his sword in case anyone came to steal the bride. Assuming that is not a concern for your wedding, do whatever works for you lol.

This is ABSOLUTELY one of those traditions that is completely irrelevant today. Each couple should feel free to make the choice about how/where to stand.

But honestly, this really applies to all traditions. Traditions are regionally and culturally specific (rather than universal as some will try to convince you), are ever evolving (despite many people insisting things have "always been done this way"), and perfect for customizing or abandoning completely to suit your preferences.

I’m seeing a lot more people switch it up and actually standing on opposite sides from their families so the family can actually see their person’s face Smiley smile so I say go for it!

There is nothing wrong with standing on the opposite side of the altar than what tradition suggests! I say go for it!

I actually wish we had swapped sides for the simple fact that I wish I could have seen my bridesmaids over my groom’s shoulder instead of spending the ceremony facing the direction of his groomsmen!! Would have been nice to share some glances with my girls!

My daughter just got married a few weeks ago and she did the same thing. It was her “good side”.

Same!! I stood on the "wrong" side, without noticing until after! I did not care in the slightest.

I stood on the right because I prefer my pictures taken on my left. Not an issue in the slightest and I was happy with how the pictures turned out.

I’ll be on the right as well. It’s also my good side, I despise the history behind the “bride on the left”, and also hubby is left handed and I’m right handed, so I’m used to being on his right anyway.

I want to do this as well! I was curious did you change anything with the boutonniere side as a result of you standing on the opposite side?

Maybe your FH will need a sword at his side. Can't be too cautious.

Haha. I had the convention messed up in my head. I wonder how many attendees would be disturbed by it -- a little too focused on convention.
