Stamps for rsvp cards

Taylor, on May 10, 2023 at 1:40 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

I am looking for advice on whether or not to include stamps on the RSVP cards for guests to return to us. I am giving them the option of RSVP online or by returning the RSVP card because I know some older people may be resistant to RSVP online. Since I expect that a lot of people will RSVP online do I put a stamp on the return RSVP card? I really have no way to tell who will do what and stamps can get expensive so I don't really want to waste the money if I don't have to. Has anyone been in the same position?

Yes, you should always provide the stamp for RSVPs. This is one of the reasons we skipped physical RSVPs and did electronic only.

I would definitely put stamps on the RSVP envelopes. If you want to avoid the cost of stamps, I would stick with just online RSVP.

Did you have elderly people that had difficulty? I guess that is my biggest fear

In theory that would be much easier for me. Just trying to accommodate older people who may not be the best with technology

We had some guests in their 60s and 70s, and no one had any issues. I think in this day and age, even elderly people know the basics of how to navigate a webpage.

My fiancés grandparents don't know how to send an email without someone walking them through it so honestly they are the only ones who may have a problem but in select cases maybe we can just RSVP for people?

Maybe you could include a physical RSVP card, envelope, and stamp just for the guests you're concerned about having issues with online RSVP? That way, you save on the cost of stamps, while still providing a second RSVP option for some guests.

Or maybe you could only include physical RSVPs for those guests you are worried about.

Traditionally there were no such thing as reply cards, which were considered not only unnecessary, but inappropriate since it implied the prospective guest wouldn't have the courtesy to RSVP. These days reply cards in self addressed envelopes are a common convenience. I've personally never seen one without a stamp, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's rude not to include one. If the goal of reply cards is to make guest replies more likely, however, it makes sense that you should stamp them.

Fair enough. Thanks for the background. I had no idea reply cards were a newer addition

Not that new. Your mom probably had them. More like the generation before that.

Yes, stamps sure be included. You could do both. For those who are tech savvy would reply online. For those who may not be and you have a concern for them, stamps are needed for the RSVP
