ss Card and Changing Name - Covid/ss offices closed

Hi there! Has anyone else sent in the social security application for name change during all of this with offices being closed? I sent mine in with the original certified marriage license, a copy of my drivers license and passport, and the application. They sent it all back and said it wasn’t enough and that they needed “original documents”. Help?!

You need to mail in your original passport or driver's license, not just copies.

If you go to the social security website, it lists all the required documents and options that are available as proof: https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm

Thank you. I’m aware- I’ve read it atleast 20 times and just wanted to make sure before I send it again. I move overseas in 3 months and don’t really have wiggle room.

Did you send your original social security card?

I went in person and just brought everything, but they don't need the SS card. They need proof of the name change and proof of identity. The SS card doesn't count as either.
