Spotify/iPod Wedding

RobotCat, on March 14, 2016 at 6:14 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 21

Any one else doing a non dj wedding? I'm starting to put all of my songs together, and would love to get some input/suggestions. A dj really isn't in the budget, plus our venue doesn't really lend itself to a big dance party, nor is that something that is super important to FH and I. We will have a first dance, and parents dance, and then I think just background music as people mingle and drink. I am looking for a mix of old school R&B and "indie" rock, with of course a few classics mixed in.

is the playlist so far, not organised at all, if anyone would like to check it out.

What are your must play songs, what do you really want to hear that day, has anyone had success or disappointment with a self DJed reception?

Guests don't know what you want them to do and generally don't stay as long. The DJ helps create the mood, and the music is only part of it....what songs to play when, etc. and they pilot the event.

    I second what Jay said.

It's not that they are bad weddings, it's a different vibe. One of my best friends got married at SF city hall and had a short reception (cocktails and apps) at a nearby restaurant. It was around 40 people and just a few hours long (unless you wanted to stay longer). In this sort of case, I would say the DJ isn't necessary/doesn't make sense.

If you are expecting people to dance to the ipod music, you might be disappointed. People might leave early. It's not a big deal though.

Yeah a dj/band really pumps up the party.. They not only play music but interact with everyone and make announcements when things are happening as in cake cutting, garter toss, and bouquet toss.. I've never been to an ipod wedding so im not really sure but I could imagine it being annoying for someone to run to or control or phone dying all night?

It only really works for background music. You need someone to orchestrate the day as far as ceremony music, announcements, dances, etc. AND someone to read the mood and put songs together that work together.

I'm not saying it can't work, but it's different.

We were are not allowed to have a DJ, so we used Spotify. I set up a playlist, took months to do so. I got the premium version and had the music fade in and out. I made the music flow through different genres. I thought about what I like and what the guests would like. We actually had a good amount of dancing for a small party. I even added in some of the line dances, because my family loves them.

I do have to say, make sure that you designate someone you really trust to switch the music at the beginning. Like between dinner, entrances, first dance, etc. Also, see if that person is willing to MC. We had a really small wedding, so there wasn't much need, but the person I put in charge still managed to muck it up. That was my fault. I forgot to show her how to handle it before and the bluetooth disconnected and she couldn't figure out how to fix it. Since it was just family, I didn't really care, a bigger wedding, I may have been a little embarrassed.

Practice makes perfect! Once we got to the reception party part, I just let the playlist go and it was fine.

Our phone didn't die. We had a bluetooth block rocker speaker that came with a microphone, 72 hours of charge, portable, on wheels. It was easy to move from ceremony, to dinner, then outside.

Thanks for the advice! I really don't expect our guests to dance, it's just not our crowd. At my brother's wedding last year they had a great live band and most people ended up outside playing games and mingling, not on the dance floor! And honestly, I don't want to dance all night! Thanks VMDIZZLE, I'm going to check out that speaker it looks awesome!

Check out the Bose Soundtouch system 10. You can wirelessly stream from your phone to the fabulous speaker over Bluetooth.

I hope it's successful for what I'm aiming for lol. How many people are you inviting to the wedding?

My sister is a sound engineer, and is acquiring speakers and a mixer so we can hook up her ipad with a set playlist (multiple, actually - for ceremony, background during dinner, and dancing). We're including a song request line on our RSVP cards, so hopefully that will help us build a songlist.

My brother is most likely going to help us with announcements.

I'm also considering making a Playlist and designating someone as MC who is comfortable with it, still tweaking the Playlist and trying to collect good dance music that is always included at a wedding

We had a backyard wedding without dancing/events and I made a playlist on my MacBook and brought it outside with our receiver and speakers. It worked great. We also asked for song choices on our RSVPS which ended up being really fun because people were excited when their songs came up.

It sounds like you know your crowd and that this will work for you!

We are going to use Spotify and a friend's external speaker. Have a playlist for dinner and one for the reception, and a helpful friend to everything stays playing!

Our venue includes a sound system, with little space for a dance floor. The reception will only be 3 hours and end around 6. A dj seems unnecessary, except to MC. I plan to use my amazon prime music to build a Playlist for free that I can download

I found a bunch of covers I really liked! They are mostly acoustic and work well as background music. They are pretty popular songs but with a different sound. Check it out... https://play.spotify.com/user/1273426552/playlist/3ZNmArNVoHLLGFTu7vbYqv

Personally, people like "all the DJ does is hit play!" But so not true. Our DJ facilitated the whole night after ceremony. He did grand entrance, announced when dinner was, announced speeches, cake cutting etc. he kept the party going too by taking requests (like the wedding waltz for a couples 55 year anniversary!) and hosted the reception so my husband and I were free to mingle

If you want the traditional stuff like first dance, father/daughter dance and grand entrance, you will at least need an Emcee to get things going.

My brother and SIL did an ipod playlist for their wedding. I was skeptical, but in all honesty, it was a heck of a party!! The dance floor was full the whole night, and everyone had a great time!
