Spotify Playlist

Denise, on January 4, 2019 at 10:01 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

Okay, so I'm using spotify instead of hiring a DJ in order to save a few dollars (Sound equipment isn't an issue either, my grandfather is in a band so no need to rent any). But I was wondering when should I start working on my playlist? I know that if I start now quite a few songs will be outdated, overplayed and just annoying by that point so when is the happy medium?

I’m an organizer / planner so I’d start working on it now. Some songs you know you’ll want played regardless of how old they are. You can always revisit the playlist 🎼

I thought of doing this since we also love older music, more like 60's music so there definitely are a few that we know we will absolutely want played. I guess I'll just add as I go and take off the ones that get old.

    I think that’s a great option.

    Hey Denise!

So cool that your grandfather was in a band and you already have the sound equipment taken care of! Sounds like it worked out perfectly! You could always start with older hits that you two like and then come back to more recent music later on. That way you can evaluate if the songs became annoying/overplayed but still have a solid playlist already built!

I just downloaded all of the songs I have picked out. I will be listening to them in the car, cleaning, and ect. Just to make sure that I like it, and if I don't I still have a while to change it up, or add more songs to it! (Wedding in Nov)

How many songs approx. for a four-ish hour reception? I'm thinking taking the average length of a song (3 minutes) and taking the 240 minutes that would be in 4 hours and dividing (80) and then adding 20-ish more. So like 100 songs just so that it wont stop playing and we wont have to listen to the same songs over again

I'd start now. That way you can have a good outline for what you want, and then you can sprinkle in newer songs that you end up liking before the wedding.

We like music from all decades and genres, so for a few months, we would just add songs. As the wedding got closer, we trimmed the list down and placed them in the order that we wanted them to play (this was on Apple Music, I don't use Spotify). We wanted so many fast songs, then a slow song, then some cultural songs, etc.

I am doing the same thing! My fiancé and I sat down and started a Spotify list just to get it going. I got Spotify premium so we can play it anywhere. Spotify also has some good existing playlists that you can pick through to find what you like. Now whenever we hear something on the radio or when we are out, we have been adding it to our list. It feels like a lot less work this way! We are also making separate playlists for dinnertime and dancing. Today I just made a new playlist for getting ready that morning. Hope this helps!

Also- everything I read online advises having two extra hours of music, so if you have a three hour reception you would want five hours of music.
