Spotify Playlist Reception?

Kayla, on December 30, 2019 at 2:11 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 9

Does anyone have any feedback on this? Our Reception will be a 3 hour riverboat cruise with open seating throughout the upper and lower decks of the boat and come and go buffet style dinner & open bar. Having about 50 of our closet friends and relatives. We planned to make a playlist and also give guests the access to add songs or play songs. Not sure if folks will get bored not having a DJ to direct them to dance. I figured as long as the song choices were good we should be ok? Plus the views from the boat will be spectacular.

We are having our reception in my FH's parent's backyard and are planning on doing the same thing! Our crowd knows we are more chill and aren't expecting some grand reception. I think it'll be totally fine!

A playlist is fine as long as you’re not going for a party kind of feel. If you are, a good DJ really can’t be replaced.

A DJ really does come in handy for making announcements, getting people engaged, and encouraging people to dance. I’m not sure you will have much dancing with just a playlist.

“Good” music is very subjective. You could have a pretty disconnected playlist if you’re opening it up for guests! Perhaps ask for song requests in your RSVP cards or on your website, and factor some of those into your playlist for mealtime or dancing. As others have said, a playlist isn’t the same level as a DJ... even the greatest party playlist of all time loses some luster because without an MC it’s just background music. 🤷‍♀️

It depends on the type of wedding reception that you want. A DJ provides direction and keeps the party going whereas music can just be background noise. A DJ knows how to work the room and can tell what type of music the crowd likes. They also help with announcements and the overall flow of the reception. I would never recommend a playlist over a DJ.

I went to a wedding that tried this and failed miserably. The bride wasn’t a planner, and just threw her bridesmaids up with a microphone to make announcements that they weren’t prepared to make. The sound system wasn’t loud enough, so everyone chit chatted over them and didn’t pay attention, so no one knew when the first dance started until they started dancing, or when cake cutting happened. The playlist was music the bride liked, but not dancing music, so the dance floor was pretty much empty the whole time. No one was in charge of keeping an eye on the playlist, so no one bothered to try skipping songs or finding another playlist with better music. It was just a sad mess. My mom and I had discussed a playlist reception for my own wedding before this wedding. After this wedding, we couldn’t be talked out of spending the money on a DJ.

We have an officiant and an MC. We are using the venue sound system and spotify playlists. I found my MC from my local toastmasters club so I know she's great. It might not be as great as a DJ but we are trying to budget and are pretty particular about stuff we do and do not want played.

We are not doing all the traditional wedding stuff dances, garter toss, cake cutting and no wedding party either so announcements arent really what I am worried about. I just dont want guests bored on the boat but really just want a mix and mingle vibe vs a dance party.

That’s fine, I’m just shared my experience of a wedding without a DJ. Even without the dancing, I wouldn’t say that the music added anything to the vibe of that particular wedding. Perhaps I would say it just made it harder to hear people, since there was a ton of us crammed together. I’m the opinion that it’s nice to have someone adjust the music as the event goes along (dinner vs chitchat) and adjust based on guest response to the music. I’ve read of weddings that did not intend to include dancing, and didn’t even rent a dance floor, but their guests found ways to dance anyways. I’m not saying that’ll happen during yours, but again, it might be nice to have someone adjust the music if some guests do want to dance a bit. Just food for thought, but you do you.
