SPOT CLEANING IVORY SATIN DRESS

AmyMarie, on May 11, 2009 at 11:03 AM Posted in Planning 0 5

I purchased a gorgeous ivory satin gown for my December wedding and I am concerned due to a spot on the dress. It is not ink or anything serious but just a very small dirt spot. When I tried the dress on, I was wearing powder make-up and the dress shop took dry cleaning fluid and fixed that area around the bustline for me before I took it home.

My dilemna is that the dress shop I bought it from charges a flat rate of $99 to just hem the dress (does not matter how many layers) and of course will take care of any dirt that occurs during the alteration process free of charge (pressing is extra). There is no way that I am paying almost $100 for hemming alone and then extra for any other alterations. I plan on taking my dress to a local seamstress and she will charge me half that cost.

I need to know how I should go by spot cleaning the dress myself. Commercial dry cleaning fluid is the way to go but I do not know where to look. Maybe call a fabric store? Any advice?

I'm sorry but there is no way that I am going to pay over $300 to get the WHOLE dress cleaned just for one spot...and this is BEFORE the wedding? No way....maybe AFTER the wedding when all is said and done but I think it is rediculous. This dress is polyester satin and I have heard crazy things like David's Bridal putting these poly/satin dresses in a regular washer...again I am looking for advice on how to go by spot the cleaning the dress on my own and eliminating the PRO's which also eliminates their rediculous costs.

    Thanks!!!

Honestly since they are going to spot clean it, hem it ....$100 is very reasonable. That would be the way I would go. Are you sure it is extra for them to press/steam it...they usually do that after alterations for free.

From what I have seen online your best bet is to get some dry cleaning fluid from your local store and put a small amount on a white cotton cloth (t-shirt would be perfect) and do a test first. if the test works out ok, you just dab/tap the spot with the cleaner. dont rub because you could spread the spot depending on what caused it. I also found a website but havent looked at it yet. www.ifi.org

They are suppose to have advisors on how to clean different fabrics if lables are not correct.
