Spinoff of my earlier thread: butt pucker and bustle trouble

Rachey, on May 20, 2014 at 9:20 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

So went for my fitting today, and had a huge "bubble" butt pucker if you will (zipper), and after taking it apart three different times, they were able to make it lie flat - yay! But now the problem is the bustle. My dress is a very sheer chiffon with a train so even with it bustled in now 5 places (three spots in the middle like on each side, and now two additional on each side) I still step on it so I'm wondering how the HELL I'm going to dance in it. I'm fine if I walk forward, a little shaky on the side, but definitely can't step backwards. It's almost like bustling a nightgown because the material just pools at my feet. Does anyone else feel restricted in their dress for dancing? I'm super bummed and I feel like going to a new tailor for a second opinion. The bustles aren't too high (well below my butt) and I know with a train you must have a bustle but I'm wondering if I can raise it. Here's my dress. This is from my last fitting but at least you can see where the bustle starts

I didn't really take more pics today because I was so flustered and in and out of the dress at least six times. but this is with just the three bustles onto two different buttons. Today they added the side bustles, two on each side. The length has been altered since this pick but the back is the same length. I want to dance, Wah!

I know this pic looks a little weird, but I feel like it needs to be bustled so it doesn't drag the floor, almost at ALL. Otherwise I'll literally be stepping on it all night. What do you ladies think? Should I take it somewhere else? This is just an example (not my dress) I feel like mine could definitely be higher, something more like this:

Soooo I went to my first alterations place and went through the butt pucker/"thats the best we can do"/flustered moment. I just took my dress and left. I tried to convince myself that maybe they were right, maybe it wasn't that big of a deal.

Then I tried to go to sleep and woke up at like 2am in a panic about my dress, and then found a new alterations person and visited him the next day.

I would sleep on it, or just book a second opinion from someone with awesome Yelp reviews, it can't hurt!

I like the second picture much better. Is that your dress? If so I'd do that for sure.

Bustles are the fucking wedding demons here to ruin our days. Not many bustles have I thought "damn that looks like a good bustle" They are just weird. =P

I am wearing a crinoline specifically to prevent my skirts from tangling around my legs. Maybe give that a try...

Edit: just looked closer @ your picture. You should be good with adding a crinoline as your hem is little too long actually, causing the problem you're describing.

    You're a lovely bride!

@ mrs p, no the bottom pic was an example of a dress with sheer material with a much higher bustle which I think I could do with mine. I know it will change the look completely but I don't rly care at reception. Thanks for your feedback!

@gail my dress is not meant to wear anything underneath but I could try. I was going for the flowy beach non poofy look.

I definitely think bustles tend to change the look of the dress (it might be the reason why I dislike them so much). I'm actually really nervous to get my bustle fixed up as well when I start alterations. We mimicked what they'd look like and thankfully it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't anything to be excited about ha! *sigh

Don't worry about the change of the look. I think you'll be happier at the end of the night that you didn't step on it while boogy-ing down. Smiley smile I think if anything it will just give the bottom of your dress more "fluff" and volume if you do it like your example. Good luck!

The bustle needs to be higher because it's still dragging. The dress should be pretty much the same length all the way around when bustled. It may need a extra bustle down lower so it would have the bustle you already have and then a under bustle lower to pull the extra up.

@mrs country lace that's what i think. It should be pretty much same length all the way around. I'm going someplace new for sure. They just keep telling me the bustle was where it should be for the dress.

For that dress it is low. I have long train so I have a ballroom bustle and is the same length all the way around. Find a seamstress that knows that a bustle is suppose to do that.

Thank you ladies. You confirmed my gut feeling that something isn't right. They spent so much time fixing the zipper and I feel like they just wanted to shoe me out the door because it was past closing time. Unfortunately I'll have to pay someone new.

To answer your question, yes, I feel somewhat restricted for dancing in my dress. It's a bit of a ballgown. I think I'll just end up dancing with my upper body haha! Smiley smile

My dress doesn't have much of a train because i didn't want a huge bustle and i'm getting a french bustle. but yea, i hate bustles...

I would not be comfortable dancing (or walking, for that matter!) in a dress that dragged on the ground at all...my dress has a train, but I will be putting in a ballroom bustle so that it won't touch the ground at any point after the ceremony.

You should definitely see someone else. The whole point of a bustle is to keep your dress off the floor! You need to be able to move around comfortably at your wedding!

Seriously! I'm so pissed right now about this whole thing. At least I have the dress in my possession but the fact they tried convincing me that the bustle is fine, and told me that I can't bustle it more with this fabric/dress as I'm walking around stepping on the dress ticks me off. I was so happy with this bridal salon until this happened. I don't care if that shit is jacked up and looks funny, I want it off the floor so I can dance and not step on it/trip/rip the dress. I'm looking at Austrian bustles which have a ribbon along the back and you just pull the string and it bunches up like a window shade. Seems real easy and appropriate for the fabric.
