Speech suggestion/first dance suggestion

Kimberly, on August 24, 2022 at 8:34 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8

My husband and I got married last October with just our parents, and are having a more formal event this October to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. It will be similar to a wedding reception with a cocktail hour, then dinner, dessert (with cake cutting), and dancing afterwards.

We were going to skip out on the speeches, but I still wanted to maybe make a small speech toward the end of cocktail hour to personally thank people for coming and then segway into dinner. Is this a good idea? What is an example of something I could say? I am not that good talking infront of people. I don't want it to be too short and akward, but I don't want it to be drawn out.

Also, any suggestions on when we should have a 'first dance.' Should we do it during cocktail hour or after dessert?

For a speech, I would just make it short and sweet. If you aren't sure exact wording I'm sure you could find some examples on Google.

Do you plan on having an introduction into your reception following cocktail hour? If so I would go straight into your first dance after you are introduced. I think that's typically the smoothest transition.

"Husband and I just wanted to take a quick moment and thank everybody for joining us to celebrate. Having you all here is the greatest blessing we could ask for, and we are incredibly excited to spend the rest of the night catching up and enjoying each others company."

I was going to have cocktail hour the first hour of the event. I was going to have the dj do a general annoucement welcoming guests to the event about 20-30 minutes into the event saying "___ and ___ want to welcome you to the event of the evening to celebrate their anniversary. Let's give the couple a round of applause" (maybe the last part).

I also liked what Bailey posted, which was "Husband and I just wanted to take a quick moment and thank everybody for joining us to celebrate. Having you all here is the greatest blessing we could ask for, and we are incredibly excited to spend the rest of the night catching up and enjoying each others company." (I was thinking of doing this towards the end of the cocktail hour and additionally mentioning dinner will be served shortly).

First dance is typically after you do your entrance to the reception.

I feel like that's a fine idea! The key is to be very authentic with your guests.
