Speech order

K, on September 14, 2019 at 9:36 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4
FH wants to give a speech at our wedding and wants to go first so that we can make a toast to ourselves. What do you guys think? Tacky? I know it’s traditional for the father of bride to go first but fiancé and I are paying for the whole wedding. Would it be ok if our parents go after our speech?

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the couple giving speeches at their own wedding, as long as the speech is centered around your guests and not yourselves—thank them for coming and celebrating, wish them well, etc. I do think it’d be in poor taste for him to toast you two, though—let others do that part.

Agree it's totally appropriate you the two of you to give a speech, but if others are giving speeches, I'd have them go first (and make the toasts), and then your speech can include a response to all the nice things they said about you.

We hosted the wedding so I gave the welcome toast shortly after dinner was served. I think whoever is hosting should be the first to give the toast since it is a welcome toast, and if this is you and your FH then you and him should speak first. But, you don't toast yourselves. It should be a toast to welcome and thank the guests for coming. You are toasting your guests.
