Speaking of TMI warnings...

Jennifer, on May 6, 2011 at 1:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

I *think* I have a yeast infection. This is embarrasing, but Im 34 yers old and have NEVER had a yeast infection before! So I jumped onto webmd.com and went through their symptom questionaire. Results say that I may have a mild yeast infection and to get it treated.

ugh....

Do any of you ladies have suggestions on what prodcuts works best from the rest? There are so many!

thanks!

*and dont be mean....I feel like a schoolgirl asking a silly question*

It's nothing to be embarrassed about. It's just a pH level thing. Monistat 3 works great and it's easy. You just apply some goopy cream for 3 days. I think they came out with a monistat 1, but I haven't used it. Doesn't hurt to go to the gyno if you're due for a check up but personally, I wouldn't make a special trip for it.

Ugh, I had a few over my years from antibiotics... I used the one that had the little egg that you insert at night. It's yucky and messy in the morning, but they always seemed to work for me. I think it was Monistat. I can't remember what other companies make OTC meds. I hope you feel better soon, those are the worst!!!

Pick up one of the yeast infection dector kits. If it says yes, I suggest Canesoral. It's a one time pill and external cream. I use it, works great! A tad pricey, it's around $23-23 where I live in Canada.

Monistat 1 is great...they have the one time cream applications along with a tube for the outside, or they have the one time little egg application along with cream for the outside. Sorry! Feel better soon!

I have used Monistat 1 and it works. But follow the directions. I tried to use it in the middle of the day because I was so uncomfortable and I got a big grease stain on my lady area. Nearly ruined my pants and embarassed the heck out of myself!

Since I am a diabetic I tend to get yeast infections due to out of control blood sugars. Here is what my Doctor told me to do. She said that when you wash your clothes that it does not remove all the bacteria in your clothes no matter what you do so when you take your underwear off pour peroxide on them to kill the bacteria and do not use a washrag in the shower/bath. Instead use antibacterial soap only (she recommends Dial antibacterial bar). When you get out of the shower/bath take a hair dryer to fully dry yourself off in the areas where you have the infection. Do not wear underwear to bed to allow your infected area to air out because yeast loves warm, dark, wet places so it is better if you try to prevent that. Lastly, she said to sit in a sitz bath of water and baking soda. I don't have a sitz bath so I just pour a good amount in the tub and soak in it. Generic yeast infection cream has the same ingredients as the name brand and work just as well.

Wow! thanks Donna! Im always finding excuses to sit in a bathtub!

thanks ladies. I will try a pH tester to see if I even have the junk and if I do, I will try some of the items you recommend.

Ugh....this sucks. I *never* had this sort of thing before. Yuck.

Don't use bubble bath or anything like that because it can irritate the infected area and make it worse. Trust me on this. Last November, we still can't figure out how it happened but I started out with a yeast infection, which led to a UTI, and then lastly I got shingles. All in the same area at the same time. Some days I couldn't even sit, stand, or lay down because I hurt so bad and all I could do was cry. It really took the cake that when I had to pee that it felt like fire because I was so raw down there and I would literally scream and then it got to a point where I just didn't want to use the bathroom at all. My FH and I live together and he felt so helpless. He took care of me, made sure I took my medicine, took my temperature (I had a fever for a couple of days), made sure I ate (I lost 5 lbs in 3 days) and drank, and made sure I went to all my doctor appointments.

I have had 2 yeast infections before. One after each of my kids, doctor said it was caused my level changes.. Monistat worked for me. They have different ones such as the Monistat 3 has to be used/done for 3 days and they also came out with a Monistat 1, but never used that one. It comes with cream for the itching and then before you go to bed you stick one of these pellet looking things up there and thats it. No sex either until it's gone.

I have had plenty of them! All through out both of my pregnancies as well as being on birth control or switching condom brands. It sucks! But if you aren't sure, first you should go into a doctor. Any doctor will work! Those test things don't often work! It's a waste of money half the time! The doctor can give you a little pill that you take and in 7 days it's gone! I would recommend if you do something over the counter, to get a 7 day because sometimes even when the symptoms disappear, it can lead to a bacterial infection that HAS to be treated by antibiotics! Those suck even worse!

I know this might sound super gross, but does it smell bad? Because that is one way to tell between one and the other. They even do a "whiff" test for the bacterial infections.

Or you could use PLAIN yogurt on a tampon! You make sure it's thoroughly lubed up with it, put it in for a couple minutes then pull it out. Don't wipe the excess away! Eating yogurt helps a lot too! Continued.

I know that sounds weird, but yogurt contains yeast, the good ones! It helps to balance it out.

If you do go to the doc for a pill, make sure you pick up a tube of the external itch cream! The pill doesn't help with that right away!

As an OB nurse, I'd suggest that if you've never had a yeast infection you see your doctor this first time to confirm. It most likely is just that, but you don't want to treat a yeast infection and miss treating something that might be more serious. It'll probably just be an office visit for a visual inspection and swab. I'd say it's worth the bother. Then you'll be certain if you have another yeast infection in the future...and can just pop down to the pharmacy for some Monistat.

Monistat works, but until you get to the store, plain ol' hydrogen peroxide (diluted with water) on a clean wash cloth will kill the yeast on the surface and temporarily relieve the itching. Be sure to dilute, or it will sting a little!
