Spanish vows?

Hanna , on October 22, 2017 at 2:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 21

Hi!

So my FH is hispanic and I have been thinking about surprising him and saying a line of my vows (we're writing our own) in spanish. That's not his first language, but it's his parents' and much of his families so he speaks it often.

I'm trying to learn it so I can communicate better with some of his family and because we both want to raise our children to speak both, and he gets really excited and proud when I can say/understand things.

Would this be a good or bad idea?

Thank you!

I've thought about this too! I think it's a great idea! It will mean so much to him and his family.

That's an awesome idea! I think his family will be touched that you put in all the effort to be able to communicate with them better. And if he gets excited when you say things, I'm sure he will be stoked to hear you say it in your vows!

Oh my goodness this is so sweet! I have chills. I think that would be beautiful and mean so much to them/him! Are you planning to give the translation also, or not? Just wondered! Smiley smile

I think it's a great idea. Just please do not use google translate. It is not always the right translation because language isn't word from word or in the same order in sentences. Have someone who speaks it well and translate it for you.

That’s really sweet! We were thinking about doing something bilingual as well. However the priest said our ceremony needed to be in the language we both understood. I’m not sure if that’s a church requirement or a Puerto Rican law requirement. Something to ask your officiant.

That's an awesome idea. Just be sure your officiant knows about it and practice with a Spanish speaker you can trust. Best wishes!

Go for it! I considered Vietnamese vows, since FH's family is in good portion first gen immigrants, but I butcher the language so horribly that I'd end up offending everyone instead of having a beautiful touching moment lol

Do it!! This will be such a nice surprise. For the "traditional" vow portion, FH is saying it in English, and I am saying it in my native language.

If part of his family only speaks Spanish it would be really sweet to say them all in Spanish, and then again in english!!

Definitely one or two lines would be super sweet... But not the whole thing if you don't already fluently speak it. And I second to ask somebody to help you with it that is fluent. Not google translate or another online thing.

I absolutely LOVE this idea! Spanish isn't my first language either, but I grew up speaking it since I was 5. I think that's an amazing gesture - if more of our guests spoke Spanish I would definitely want to incorporate it too. Definitely ask someone fluent for help with grammar and pronunciation. You don't want to say hunting when you mean marrying Smiley winking

Find a native or fluent speaker to help you. Google translate will only get you so far.
