Southern/new Orleans Tradition- Cake Pull Question

Kay, on July 4, 2018 at 6:35 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11

We are having a southern wedding and I would like to do the cake pull tradition (common place in New Orleans). I went to school in New Orleans but I also love it because it reminds me of how many grandmother would put charms in our Christmas cake...so it feels like a special thing for me to do.

My question is though, for those in the know, do the couple cut the cake first and then the cake pulls or cake pulls first?

What is a cake pull? It sounds interesting. I'm from Michigan so I've never seen it done before.

I know it's traditionally for single women but we aren't going to do that. We were going to do our bridesmaids but do you think one could include our mothers or do you think its more for "younger" people?

"Most popular in the South, especially around New Orleans, the Cake Pull gets it’s roots from an old Victorian tradition of “ribbon pulling.” In those days, charms of luck and good fortune were placed into the wedding cake by the bride for her single friends."

Many people do it for their bridesmaids and not necessarily single friends...like many wedding traditions its morphed over time.

Yes, thats what we did. I had a Disney themed wedding with a Victorian charm pull and had pure sterling silver charms made for my bridesmaids and bith Mother/s. The next to marry got Snow Whites wish well and they played "Some Day My Prince will Come" in the back groud. I gave my M-I-L a slot machine. She loved it.

PS. I got creative with a bead and ribbons to rig the deck.

I’ve also seen cake pulls at the morning after brunch or the rehearsal dinner. I think there’s definitely room for your own touch. I also love the southern tradition of a groom’s cake! Smiley smile
