Southern wedding menu help?

Hannah, on August 8, 2019 at 11:15 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7
Let me preface this by saying we live in the Deep South, Florida/Alabama line. Our wedding is Christmas themed. We are doing a little bit of rustic touch, but not entirely rustic (my bridesmaids are in gold sequined gowns). It will definitely be a little bit elegant as far as attire/decorations. So I’m really struggling with the menu. We wanted something true to our southern roots, some good ole comfort food. We have selected the sides (Gouda mashed potatoes, southern green beans with bacon and onions, and Mac and cheese bake). The two meats are where we are running into a problem. We immediately chose fried chicken tenders (classic and good for picky eaters/children) but were having a hard time deciding on a beef. We wanted something “fancy” for the beef to balance the chicken. But then my fiancé saw the catering company offered country fried steak and is DEAD SET on having that as the beef. I’m actually okay with that but didn’t want two heavily breaded meats. So I’m trying to decide on the poultry dish now. I like the idea of smoked turkey but realize not everyone cares for smoked flavor. Then I though fried turkey because even though it is fried, it’s not heavily breaded. There are a few other chicken dishes but the turkey sounds the best to me and somehow more “Christmas-y”. So my question is, which Turkey would you go with? Or would you scratch that and do another chicken (lemon pepper perhaps?) ? I know this seems minuscule but it’s currently stressing me so I need opinions.

I would definitely go with smoked turkey over fried. You're more likely to have guests who don't want to choose from two fried entrees than to have guests who refuse to eat smoked meats.

With a menu of country fried steak, mashed potatoes, mac n chz, & green beans, I personally think adding only one fancy dish would be a little out of place. So I wouldn't worry too much about having something elegant, because you can have a nice wedding and still have good ol' comfort food. If Turkey is what you want, then I don't see anything wrong with either Turkey option. If not everyone likes smoked turkey, then they can eat the steak....and vice versa. Fried turkey wouldn't be too bad either, because it'll be sliced and like you said it won't have breading. My only menu suggestion, even though you didn't ask lol, would be to add another vegetable option like a side salad.

I like the turkey option or the other chicken option that's lemon pepper, just because everything else already sounds too heavy for the sides anyway so turkey and the lemon pepper chicken sound a bit lighter.

Great point! It would seem kind of out of place to have something super elegant.😂 thanks so much! I do think we are going to add a salad, it just won’t be provided by the caterer. I know the meal is pretty heavy, but the comfort food is definitely the setting we are going for.

We are doing smoked turkey, brisket, and ribs. Mac and cheese, potato salad, baked beans, garden salad, a vegan bbq dish. We’re doing a buffet but we’ll still have servers and nice plates, glasses, decor.

We are doing upscale Southern food for our Georgia wedding. We are doing a smoked beef brisket! That might balance out the breading situation!

Nothing wrong with that girl, we had comfort food at our wedding too:

Apps- Crab dip & pita chips, fruit & veggies, and BLT Salad

Dinner- BBQ & buns, fried chicken, green beans, mac n chz, cole slaw, and dinner rolls.

Dessert- Big ol' wedding cake (5 different flavors) & a S'mores bar
