Sorority Sing!

Victoria and Ralph, on April 3, 2014 at 10:57 AM Posted in Planning 1 25

My sorority sisters are a major part of my life, and make up about 97% of my female friends list for the wedding. I've heard of sorority sings being done at wedding (where the sisters sing a special song to the bride) and absolutely LOVE the idea. Have any of you done a sorority sing/are you planning on doing a sorority sing/participated in one/etc. ? What did you think of including it? When did it take place in the wedding?

More information for those of you who are unfamiliar with the idea:

ETA: I'm a sister of Theta Phi Alpha! Add your sororities too!

I think this is a fabulous idea! I am just in the process of planning my wedding but have been to multiple weddings for my sisters. One of my very favorite parts of the weddings was when we all got up and did our traditional sorority song for special occasions. Although I cannot remember exactly when this took place during the reception I do believe it was towards the beginning when the dance floor had not yet filled up (ours is a bit crazy). I think that sometimes at weddings there are so many sorority sisters that the other guests sometimes intimidated/think we are all a bit crazy (you know how that goes when we all get in the same place for a reunion!) and something like this really shows everyone how special the bond really is! Best of luck with your planning!

Thank you so much Samantha! I was thinking of keeping it earlier in the ceremony but not really sure when. Maybe after the special dances?

I'm in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and we are planning on doing the song right after the cake cutting and before the dance floor opens. All of my bridesmaids are in the sorority so I can definitely understand wanting to have that moment.

Ahhh @Julia Beth! No way! I hardly ever meet other Theta Phis! What chapter are you from? Are you doing anything Theta Phi related for your wedding? I really want to include something but don't know how!

Crtnjean - that's a great place to put it! I definitely want it to be before everyone starts dancing!

I know, I got so excited when I saw your post! I'm from Beta Beta, in NJ. I'm toying with the idea of giving white roses to the sisters who are coming. They'll all be at the same table, so I think I might have the venue leave it at their table settings.

    What chapter are you from?

Alpha Delta Pi here. I told my sisters that if they start singing to me I'm running. My MOH (also a sorority sister) assured me that if any singing commences she's hightailing it with me! Smiley smile

I'm from Beta Sigma in New Jersey too! I thought of doing something like that too. A friend of mine from another org suggested including an insert in the invitation asking sisters to wear blue and be my "something blue" since it is one of our colors. I'm thinking I might do that!

AZD here - I didn't get married until I was 8 years out of college so my sorority sisters are all spread out and I only keep in touch with 3 or 4. So we didn't do a song at my wedding, but I have been to several others and we did sing them one song. It was a nice tribute Smiley smile

I definitely won't be having a song, but I wanted a way to honor my sisters. I wasn't able to have any of them as bridesmaids, but they are some of my very closest friends. Giving them a rose would be a small gesture but I think would remind them how important they are to me.

I'm a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. We have our lovely song that all Sorors sing to the bride during the reception. It's typically done after everyone has eaten their meals, and sometimes after cake cutting. I love it, but I'm biased...lol. I've been to a ton of weddings for members of my sorority and others, and it's always fun to do/watch, in my humble opinion. :-)

Kappa Delta here. At the weddings I've been to, we have sung our Lullaby at a few different times. One was during the speeches after a little explanation so that those who weren't members had a clue as to what was going on. Another was during the dancing and we circled her on the dance floor. It was quieter and more private that way.

Definitely Della! The article I posted had a really sweet quote about them.

"The tradition is always carried through, whether with a full chorus, a shaky duet, or just a single rose and a hug as the bride makes her getaway. Sierra’s mama says that “the gift to the bride was not the rose or the song, but for her to remember that she would always belong to her sisters, and they would always belong to her.”"

Thank you Tiki! I agree! I've always enjoyed seeing them, even before I joined my sorority!

    HEY Soror CrtnJean!!!

Most of my BMs and familiar are my sorority sisters (grandma/ aunts/ cousins etc) so we will DEFINITELY be doing this. I think even as a non-Greek guest most African Americans who are familiare with NPHC greeks fully expect to sit through this part... My FI is also in a fraternity (Alpha Phi Alpha) and they will be singing as well....
